    Could be anywhere
The success of communism! The joys of the proletariat in the USSR! The city that Stalin built...one of many joy filled workers paradises.

And spewing pollutants and heavy metals beyond any limits we set here.

Yeah, about 8 billion pounds a year. The article said the ground is now so polluted, it is economically feasible to mine it. So much sulfur dioxide in the ground, there is no vegetation for 20 miles.

But my truck is the thing warming the planet...

The soil is so contaminated that it is now economically feasible to mine it.:runaway::wow:

Of all the statements in that article, that one probably painted the picture best.

4% of the population is healthy. That's pretty incredible too. But I think we ought to be studiying those 4%. Why don't they have heart disease or cancer? Is it genetics? Lifestyle?

I wonder the reasoning of the brightly colored roofs and houses?

I wondered the same. I have two theories, and they're probably both ignorant.

    1) Something has to look cheery in that bleak place.

    2) some sort of traditional method of helping find ones way home in a snowstorm.

Both of those crossed my mind.

"The city was founded in 1935, as a slave labor camp ..."

"They live, work, spend and reproduce for the mining company. The town's isolation means they pour their wages into company-owned shops and facilities. The money goes back to the company, and eventually people pass away."

Sounds like, for all practical purposes, the residents are still ... essentially ... slaves.
