This is why the reputation of the conservative oriented people in our political parties continues to diminish. For the most part (non-extremist) conservatives are great people, just like the majority of (non-extremist) liberals. Unfortunately there is a loud minority of neo-cons spewing hate everywhere and being generally intolerant.

For example: Threats of rape & killing from Fox news comments.

These comments are a reaction to the petition that the atheist group filed. (fox news :):) While I think the petition was pointless and generally stupid - this kind of reaction is simply absurd. Freedom of religion swings both ways...if the builders of that memorial want a cross there, who are you to say otherwise?

My point is this - this minority of conservatives are damaging the reputation of conservatives as a whole - why can't they see that?

There are idiots on both sides of the spectrum. Have you ever read some of the garbage that get's posted at Huffington or Salon?

Not sure what the neocon label is in regards to though.

I don't care for labels, and as such have never attempted to learn what "neocon" means. Hell, I might be one.

Neoconservatism - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Neoconservatism in the United States is a branch of American Conservatism that is most known for its advocacy of using American economic and military power to topple American enemies and promote liberal democracy in other countries. The movement emerged during the early 1970s among Democrats who disagreed with the party's growing opposition to the Vietnam War and had become skeptical of the Great Society's welfare programs. Although neoconservatives generally endorse free-market economics, they often believe cultural and moral issues to be more significant, and so have tended to be less thoroughgoing in opposition to government intervention in society than more traditionally conservative and libertarian members of the Republican Party. Many neoconservatives support the wars in Afghanistan, Iraq, and Libya.

From what I gather from your posts, you're not one. :D

Says you. Despite the all-knowing Wiki definition (see below), I think the whole necon label is a bunch of bull****, attempting to denigrate a group of people who think differently than others. Which I find hysterically ironic given the fact that those most commonly prone to slinging such mud like to pretend to be above that kind of judgment.

I happen to support the wars. Does that make me a neocon?

I happen to support libertarian ideals and most of the tea party group's platform, but I would not call myself a Libertarian or a Tea Party party member.

Labels have limited use. Best we remember their purposes is better suited to identify a philosophy and not an individual. Some here never quite get that far.

Labels are handy when the subject fits the label. Categorization is one of two things our brain does best. Neocon is a particular type of conservative, summarized by a moral majority-style attitude toward laws regulating behavior, and a pro-interventionist foreign policy.

For the warhawk aspect of a neocon, I'd say it depends. Folks can support the wars without being in favor of an aggressive intervention in every backwater hole in which we find something of national interest.

I happen to support libertarian ideals and most of the tea party group's platform, but I would not call myself a Libertarian or a Tea Party party member.
Neocons are generally antagonistic to libertarian ideals, so this would mean you're probably not one.

Meh, I have no problem being labeled a libertarian or an anarcho-capitalist. It's what I am.

I'm squarely in Fletch's camp on his definition of a neocon. That's the basis of my comment that Henk isn't one.

As far as labels, in my mind, a whack job is a whack job is a whack job, whether Neocon, RINO, Progressive, Conservative, Libertarian, Anarchist, etc..

    YMMV

They were rhetorical questions. I already know the answer to them.

It's not the label itself that I take issue with, it's the disingenuous application of it without regard to anything but a superficial statement of position, particular for the purpose of denigrating said individual. Neocon is a dirty word around here, justifiable so in many cases. And it's used far more often to vilify than simply categorize.
