Strong for the times yes. But times quickly caught up. My 65 389 Tri-power was not a street killer for the times when I owned it. It was fast enough for sure and yes I was driving it like a chevy (cause that is what I like to drive) but when a good running stock 327 350 HP L79 Nova can check out on you at will (both 3 peddle cars) it was time to make the leap to the Bow tie for me.

I ran 5 straight GTOs with 389s and 400s out of the box. They were fairly strong but getting the old big block Pontiacs to pull over 5500 rpm took some bucks.
The best running Indian head muscle I ever ran was in my 65 Goat after I dropped in a 421 tri-power out of a '62 Catalina convertible. That motor was strong as hell. I got low 13s out of it with the original FOMOCO 3spd pedal system.
I could NEVER tame the rear wheel hop on the midsize GM coil rears. AFTER I went to Mopar I learned what it took to made the Midsize GMs bite.
I'll stick with my Mopar muscle

We tamed the wheel hop with solid control arm bushings. Spun the up on a lathe out of aluminum bar stock. Sometimes it would rattle your teeth loose on the street but they would dead hook.

I can’t afford power, so I have zero hop or traction issues. She will throw you through the windshield on stopping though. And make you wish you had an oh **** bar to hold when cornering.

Have been driving the old turd daily and drove it to Lafayette this weekend for a family get together. Love that car. Have a few tweaks I need to make, but I’m extremely happy with everything that I’ve done to it over the past 6 months.
