Do you really need an affirmation that Trump would be the popular choice by supporting a primary challenge that would most likely fail?

Your primary challenge might have a chance if Democrats voted in it. I just don't see enough turnover in the Republican party for another candidate to be able to defeat Trump in a primary.

Trump has lost supporters. Even a few here. That's anecdotally factual. Demographers will tell you that process scales up. Not as many people - Dems and Republicans - support him as in 2016. Because polling with regards to Trump has (IMHO) been unreliable, there's no clear way to tell what percentage.

So, the only way to test it is to test it.

It isn't even just a Republican party turnover issue. Trump attracted big numbers ("YUGE" in his words) of Dems in order to get elected. How many of them do you think still support him? (Actually, quite a few, probably, given the socialist nature of the current Dem candidates.)

Look, odds are Trump will win the primary. But, the odds were against him last time, so that doesn't really mean much.

If you want Trump to lose the primaries, you have to be doing your best to make sure Bill Maar get's his recession.

Of course that's another R word, so likely a fail the same as Russia and Racist...

Economic corrections are inevitable. I haven't blamed presidents for those since the 1980s (when I got "woke" to how the economy works). (I'm not sure I used that right.) So, same goes for Trump.

The tariff issue isn't great for our economy, but that's just part of the overall picture. The tax reform is at least somewhat mitigating of that problem.

From my perspective, Trump is a terrible president. I only want him to lose the primary to a better candidate. Just like I would only want him to lose the general to a better candidate.

Right now, I'm not sure there is a better candidate. Truly, better the devil you know than the devil you don't.

    I think you'd be surprised.

There's enough republicans fed up with the shenanigans to vote him off the ticket. I'd also imagine that a fair number of Dems would vote a Rep. primary to do likewise.

I think I would be surprised too.

Surprised if Trump lost a primary challenge. I believe there is still sizable support for Trump. He still draws a considerable crowd size at rallies pretty much the same as he ever has.

True. No one close to qualified has stepped forward. Yet.

At this point, with the impeachment fortifying Trump's base (and probably extending his support in the middle), the Dems have similarly ensured a Trump victory in the primaries.

They'll get the fight they want.

I doubt Trump's support among independents is growing. There are too many different places that smoke is popping out; it's hard for even Republicans to genuinely believe that there's not some corruption there.

It's kind of hard to believe that after each coup attempt fails miserably and ridiculously, there are more and more gullible people lining up to believe the next one. Of course people are still gullible enough to believe that so called independents are even relevant so I guess almost anything is possible.

There have been no coup attempts.

That President Trump has not been removed from office is my more about political reality than criminal reality.

Everyone seems to assume that the Senate will not convict Trump in an impeachment trial no matter the evidence. That doesn't in any way indicate that Trump is innocent of the charges. It only indicates an unwillingness on the part of the Senate to serve as a check and balance as designed.

    Well, I disagree.

This impeachment debacle, because there's no real crime to point to, is pushing people who otherwise are NOT Trump supporters to at least marginally defend him. Frankly, that's what I'm most angry at the Dems for. I'm basically forced to defend Trump against this really bad idea.

Any Dem candidate that supports impeachment - and from what I can tell, the entire current crop does support it - runs the significant risk of losing the people who really don't like Trump, but think the impeachment thing is stupid.

The "where there's smoke, there's fire" thing won't stick to Trump. He already owns that block. There was so many fishy stuff about him in the campaign, that the voters already accept that from him.

You are assuming many facts not in evidence. The reality is that none of things of which he has been accused arise to a valid reason for removal from office or qualify as criminal activity were they even true. Evidence indicates that the accusations are not only not true but that Trumps accusers were likely guilty of exactly what the claim he did. It is pretty clear though that the House will still move to impeach though even with the lack of evidence for or indeed, even an accusation of an actual impeachable offense. In all likelihood the Senate will serve as a check and balance to the undisguised coup attempt by the House. If not, I'm sure the Impeachment of Mike Pence will commence shortly after the Impeachment of Trump concludes and will become the normal procedure every time the Democrats don't like the results of an election.

That is the whole calculation. If we all know that the Senate is too corrupt to convict even if overwhelming evidence is uncovered, certainly the congressional Democrats know that as well. (And yes, deciding the verdict before the trial is corruption, even if it is politically expedient.)

The Democrats must believe that they will benefit from exposing the Republican Party's wholesale submission to Trump.

The only assumption I am making is that the Republican-controlled Senate will not convict a sitting Republican president. While that is not by any means definitive, both parties seem to be accepting it as the most likely outcome.
