By taking the "men" and "man" out of the words "woman" and "women" we are symbolically saying that we do not need men to be "complete". We, as womyn, are not a sub-category of men. We are not included in many of the history books, studies and statistics that are done in male dominated societies, thus they do not apply to us, for in these items we do not exist. In these societies men are the "norm" and women the "particular," a mere sub-category of the "norm," of men. The re-spelling of the word "woman" is a statement that we refused to be defined by men. We are womyn and only we have the right to define our relationships with ourselves, society, with other womyn and men. These re-spellings work as a symbolic act of looking at and defining ourselves as we really are, not how men and society view us, but through our own female views of ourselves, as self-defined womyn.

don't subjugate the womynz by calling them women

Actually, this "born a woman" (sorry....womyn) issue in feminism has been a controversy for a long time and outside of this festival.

The issue is that there are some feminists (I have no idea of the percentage) who see the "T" people as harmful to the movement. They want to promote womyn as independent of men and see men who try to mimic womyn (sorry folks, there is no "becoming a womyn") as offensive and threatening to the purity of the movement. They want to preserve whatever advances they obtain for true womyn.

I would guess (and it's only a guess), that this is a small but vocal branch of feminists with the prominence of lesbianism in feminism and the political judgment that the "L" joining with the "T" enhances political power.

I'm imagining a tvshow like Captain Planet.

"With our powers of whining combined....BOOM. CAPTAIN WOMYNZ."

Is this a rhetorical question? If not, I can explain it.....and I think it makes the leftism manifest if you know the history of the movement that led to this spelling.
No it's not rhetorical. I am curious why the words are spelled differently.

OK, but I think someone hit the high points above.

The basic idea is to take any reference to "man" out of descriptors for the female of the species. This rather radical end of the feminist movement is chuffed that "woman" would have any relation to the word "man" as they want to view themselves as wholly separate from men. The use of the term "womyn" or "womom" or even denotes a rather more incendiary form of feminism than those who simply want equal rights and opportunity. They are more of the ilk that believe that pretty much all current cultural institutions are corrupt and need to be destroyed and replaced because they are the result of men dominating culture and womyn. There is a great deal of overlap between socialist/marxist philosophy and this brand of extreme feminism.
