    The Wrong Car

My buddy came to visit me in a rented a black Dodge Charger. While driving around we stopped at a strip mall for coffee. As we left the bakery he asked if I wanted to drive. A rented Dodge Charger, Oh hell yes I do!

Approaching the car I went to the driver's side door and him the passenger side. I tried opening the door but it was locked. As I asked him to unlock it, I hear " How can I f@#king help you?" Looking down I see a gun pointed at my head. I say "Wrong car brother" and very slowly I raise my hands and still facing him start walking backwards. I keep facing him as I am armed also and will return fire if he shoots. About 8 ft away and with another car between us, I turn and keep walking. As I do I see my buddies car 3 parking spots away.

I've been around guns for over 50 years and never had one pointed at me. I can tell you it was a semi auto that had a barrel the size of a 105 howitzer. Other than that, I couldn't describe the gun.

    Some observations and lessons.

The day was warm, sunny around 11am. We were in a good, safe neighborhood.

I heard his voice and upon seeing the gun, I knew I had the wrong car. In that moment time stood still. I have faced death before, skydiving, flying, car and motorcycle accidents and each time, time slowed down. Each second is an eternity and my mind goes into a hyper focus mode. My mind becomes still, eeriely quiet. It is calm, immediately looking for a solution. In flying and skydiving there were actions I could take to save myself. The same hyper focus occured after the car and motorcycle accidents. How to get out, am I hurt, etc.

In this instance the focus was not to do anything quickly. Slowly, very slowly I raised my arms to show no threat. IE. Carjacking, robbery, etc.
I told him my mistake by stating "Wrong car brother." Saying this out loud I hope to de-escalate the situation.

I kept facing him as I walked slowly backwards. Why? Because I am armed also and if this goes bad I won't just go down being shot in the back. I will at minimum try to return fire. I didn't not stop facing him until I had put another car (a barrier) between him and I. From the moment he spoke, our eyes were locked together. If eyes are the windows to the soul, his conveyed, DON'T DO ANYTHING STUPID, I WILL KILL YOU. I prayed mine convinced him I was of no threat.

There are factors that played to my advantage. The weather, daylight, time of day and the location. Change one or two of those factors and a much different outcome is possible. Two very cool heads prevailed this day. I give props to the driver for defending himself. I give him props for analyzing the situation and not just blasting away.

Ask any questions of me. What did I do right or wrong.

Wow harmless mistake on your end but imagine the other side it would appear anything but harmless. Glad everything worked out for you. Don’t think you did anything wrong obviously in hindsight maybe hit the lock button so your car beeps at you… but still nothing done wrong on either side.

I suffer from CRS - so I don't remember where I park sometimes

I unlock my Vehicles as I approach to Verify my key fob is still working ... which also verifies I am approaching the correct vehicle -

We did have a Honda with the Auto Unlock with Key Fob in your Pocket option that you actually had to Touch the Door Handle to Unlock the Doors - I can see this resulting in your situation

Sounds like it went well all things considered. Had you reacted to his gun and attempted to draw yours I would imagine you wouldn't he here to tell this story so smart move on your part. I would say you handled that pretty well.
I'm glad his door was locked though, because being armed yourself had that turned into a gunfight, he would have had a self- defense plea all day long.

I have actually got into an identical car to mine and tried to start it. Only then realizing my mistake. My car was two parking spots down.

Nobody noticed and no guns were drawn.

Same. But I noticed somebody else's stuff on the passenger seat in my case.

To be honest, at first I thought this was a REALLY late parody.

That's what allegedly happened at Castleton mall where the juvenile was killed. You're leading a charmed life.
Wild story. It sounds like an over reaction on the guy in the car's part. I'm glad you didn't get shot.
"Over reaction"? You do not know the back story of the person in the car that very well might explain why they pointed/fired their handgun.

Really? Curious when is the appropriate time to react to being car jacked? Must the gun be in your face already??
I'm just assuming the OP wasn't slinking around as one would if they were trying to steal a car. Two guys talking talking/ casually walking up to car in a safe neighborhood during full daylight hours doesn't scream "I'M BEING CARJACKED!" to me.

With the amount of "Fear Porn" out there, I'm surprised this doesn't happen more often. A robber is around every corner and you are taking your life in your own hands just by stepping out the front door ;)

Carjacking aside, if you observe someone enter your car while you are walking toward your car I don’t see a deadly threat or justification for deadly force. Even if they are driving away with your car and you (and your family) are clear of the vehicle it is a property crime right? It sucks but I am not sure drawing a firearm and shooting someone could be justified over a property crime. Just purely from a legal standpoint. Am I wrong? All of this is assuming no threats have been made and no weapons observed. Does Indiana allow deadly force to protect property?

No. (and per the law, pets are property, not family, even though we feel otherwise)

Based on your account, YOU didn't do anything wrong and are arguably a Rock Star.

The other gentleman however; is a f****** moron who probably should not be armed. Walking up to a car does not present a threat of death or serious bodily injury absent display of a weapon. What the car's occupant did is threaten YOU with deadly force. Not in defense, but rather offensively.

That individual is exactly the type of individual who puts our Rights at risk of further infringement.

I might draw in the confines of a vehicle under those circumstances, but I would do my utmost to NOT point it at any living thing or allow it to be visible while engaging in clear commands to back away. Absent a visible potentially lethal threat to me or other occupants of the vehicle there is simply no defensive basis for his actions.
