Alinsky's approach is how to take a person or small group and unseat them. This theory is much broader.
The hothouse socialists who promote such theories are generally academics with guaranteed jobs who can bully their students into agreement with their ideas (and in all fairness, they do have genuine converts) and who, by virtue of their employment, are shielded from capitalism and the (somewhat) free market. One of their problems is their overweening egos; they can't point to a single nation where socialism is a long-term success (most socialist countries - even Sweden and Denmark - are having to cut back because they're "running out of other people's money.") Despite this lack of success, they're certain that THEY'RE SO SMART that THEY can make it work, where no one else has done so, even at the point of a gun.
