I am considering attending Tim’s Action Pistol match for the first time. Can anyone help with what gear is required and the expected round count per stage/match? Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

At a minimum, I recommend an OWB holster (kydex) and two mag carriers on a good gun belt. You can start from low-ready, but I prefer to train like I carry. Round count per stage will vary, but the 80 round overall estimate they provide is pretty accurate.

It's a great training opportunity and really fun!

Here's the info sent out from Tim's...

A low key environment open to new shooters, anyone who is interested in shooting a match but hasn’t yet, come on out!

New shooter brief starts at 6:00pm, returning shooters at 6:15pm, with first shots at 6:30pm. Cost is $20. Typical round count is about 80 rounds.

    New Divisions:
RFPI = 22LR Rimfire Pistol Iron sights - Low Ready Start
RFPO = 22LR Rimfire Pistol Open (Red Dot Optics) Sights - Low Ready Start
RFPIH = 22LR Rimfire Pistol Iron Sights - Holster Draw Start
RFPO = 22LR Rimfire Pistol Open (Red Dot Optics) Sights - Holster Draw Start

Indoor Action Pistol Competition is a great way to hone handgun shooting skills in a safe and fun environment. Action Pistol involves many of the skills defensive shooters value including drawing from a holster, shooting and reloading on the move, and shooting from behind cover. Because of the dynamic nature of the sport, safety is the highest priority. It is required that shooters be proficient in the fundamentals of firearm safety, especially muzzle control and trigger discipline.

Action Pistol is a sport enjoyed by shooters worldwide, men and women, junior shooters and senior shooters. With a commitment to safety and a little bit of effort, anyone can begin shooting Action Pistol. Cold range rules.

Matches are held on the first and third Thursday of each month.

    Gear:

    - Firearm and Holster (or gun bag for low ready start)
    - 3 Magazines
    - Shoes with no open toes and good traction
    - Double magazine carrier recommended

Electronic hearing muffs are also a nice luxury, for hearing range commands and talking to other competitors between runs. At outdoor matches, if you're far enough from the action you can pop your muffs off to have a conversation, but indoors is a totally different story.

Consider a tight-collared shirt and hat with a bill. When there are walls for brass to bounce off of, hot ones can find their way into the darnedest places.

I've taken one down the shirt to my ample belly on the second round of a stage with movement.

Instant introduction to shooting through a distraction. (I'm sure my squad mates we're wondering why my arse was stuck out, and I was bent over at a 45 deg angle...)

Good, welcoming environment with a match director willing and eager to accommodate the new shooter.
