Here we are, getting ready to merge for a 10 mile single lane run, just why do drivers "race" to get in front of trucks?

The vehicle following the truck cannot see anything and must blindly follow without being able to see road contours, holes in pavement, stopped traffic, or shifts in the lanes.

Trucks shred tires all the time, just look at remains on the roadway all the time.

Trucks haul hazardous materials, dangerous to be near.

Trucks kick up debris and throw rocks at following vehicles.

Trucks leak and blow material out.

Trucks leaking oil have spattered my truck, leaking from cargo boxes has gotten all over my truck (sometimes leaking cargo, sometimes
defrosting refrigerator trailers, once a leaking OJ tanker), sand and gravel have blasted my paint and windshield.

In today's world it is hard to trust the drivers they hire.

Back in the day, most guys in my rural area were farmers or truck drivers, they were pros and you could trust them. Not today, from drivers that just have no background with big equipment, to the stressed out addicted, to the tv watching phone talking, to the porn watching while ******* ***, it is risky to trust truck drivers today. When a truck passes me today only about 20% will thank me for signaling they are clear, used to be most all did.

It is hard to trust the truck company to maintain their trucks properly.

The pressure to keep the wheels rolling and tight logistics are powerful incentives to postpone needed maintenance to get just one more run out of it

I have every confidence that the drivers here are true professionals, but it is ugly out there and drivers are going to want to get away from trucks. You might note the oft mentioned reason of speed is not on my list...

This is not going to get better. It will get worse.

Just like CM said, people are people. They are getting more and more self centered as opposed to the opposite.

Case in point; Yesterday, I made a trip across a fairly large piece of Brown County on some back roads. Every other car that I came upon approaching me was taking their half of the road out of the middle. This was noticeable as I was on very hilly/curvy roads. :n00b:

Countless cars came over and around blind hills and curves in the middle of the road, leaving no road to escape them. :dunno:

It all boils down to this....

If people could just act sensibly, merge in a polite timely fashion BEFORE the lane ends and not act like the world revolves around them and them only,
then we could go on about our daily business without too much of a problem and people wouldn't be *****ing about truck drivers like me and others
who are tired of people racing to the front of the line like it's a contest where a trophy is awarded on how many people you can peeve off.

Ah, I see that you're a new driver! Welcome to the roads!

Merging is a higher level skill that hasn't been learned yet. Hell, we can't even get people to stop using the hard shoulder like a driving lane here in Plainfield.

Do you realize that this is the same reason people are racing to get around you? Your full size pick up or sport ute also can't be seen through or around, and people stuck behind you are also at the mercy of your attention span and reaction time

Somewhat true for the first point, but not really the rest of them, a typical truck so suv is not that wide or tall.

Hint:You don't. Have somebody instrument your car to pull maybe speed and throttle position data and you'll see for yourself. A cruder version of that is you will never achieve as high an MPG number on your car's computer as what cruise will achieve

My newer car has a good intelligent cruise that has adjustable following distance and will match speeds with slower traffic as it is overtaken, establishing that following distance. A change to the left lane when able and the car resumes the preset speed. You can really only effectively use cruise outside urban areas because inside an outerbelt is to be inside the Schwarzschild limit on stupidity

Well, I know that I can navigate a slight incline without forcing the car into passing gear. Cruise control (mine anyhow) can't seem to manage that. So I'm pretty sure my unassisted driving habits are more fuel efficient than the "automatic" mode.

Chevy (or maybe it's GMC) has a camera system now that can make a box trailer "disappear" such that you can see what is behind it in your blind spot. I don't understand how it works, but it's amazing if it works as advertised. Now if only they could develop a system such that could make a semi trailer or box truck "disappear" such that you could see what's in front of that big truck that you're stuck behind, that would be a major development. I'm always leery of going through an intersection behind a big truck because I can't see the traffic lights until it's too late... especially if they were just barely making it through on a yellow light. Is it going to be yellow or red when I enter the intersection? :dunno:

So, this is fairly typical. So what is the vehicle ahead of this one doing? Could you see it's brake lights or would you have to wait for this guy to detect the problem. How about oncoming traffic? Could you see it without swinging out

Like overly large people in airline seats, the people driving these things fail to realize they're a stench in everyones nostrils

Why would you assume that the cause is thinking the world revolves around them? What if you don’t actually understand the motivation at all, and it’s nothing malicious or self centered about it? It’s just a different way to look at solving the same problem.

S you are painting with a very broad brush with this one champ. Both my rigs are trucks and with good reason. 1st I work my GMC Sierra pretty hard and it provides a revenue stream and does a lot for us beyond hat.
2nd the magic bus (3500 series convrsion van) will most likely win any altercations we may encounter except with another rig of like size.

I got your stench my friend.

OK people this one has ran its course. If yo do not like my trucks......well........do not know what to tell you.

    We are done here.

Not taking this personal just stopping this.

This thread showed me the light about some INGO members !

Just a note. I give trucks as much lee as possible out there. My son is a driver and I have many friends that live that life.

These threads always end up in the toilet as we all have pet peeves about how some folks drive or the lack of ability to actually......."Drive"

I am no better or worse than many who have posted.
