What about LED tv's. I think they cost a bit more but that is another option to consider. I think the Samsung tv's have a great picture.

Vizio is a good value brand if you are looking to save a few bucks. My parents bought one about 4 months ago from Costco and it really is a nice tv, good picture and sound.

They paid a little over 700 for 46" LCD HD TV

They also sell the brand a Wal-Mart and Sams Club

I second the Vizio, We bought a 47" LCD at WalMart for around 700, and no problems, and excellent picture

I've got a Sanyo 46" LCD HDTV & a couple of LG 42" LCD HDTV's, all of them have phenomenal pictures, especially when when watching a Blu-Ray movie or playing a Blu-Ray game.

But I think the LG's are a little crisper when you are up close to their perspective screens, from "couch distance" away you can't tell the difference, but if you walk up close to them the LG's really are sharper/crisper, I swear it's not my imagination LOL, I use one of the LG's as a computer monitor, so I sit pretty close to it.

When doing research before purchasing my new TV, Samsung was right there with LG...I decided on LG because the price was a little better.

I use one of the LG's as a computer monitor, so I sit pretty close to it.

You sit close to a 42" "monitor?" Do you buy ibuprofen by the ton?

I like the LEDs they seem to have the britest pix. However it's newer tech for TV's. As far as LCD vs Plasma the very few times I've looked at them Many times the sales person will ask me what my interest are sports or movies. One is supposed to be better than the other for sports and the other is better for movies. Can't remember which is which my, big 32inch CRT Sony still works so I don't look at them much in detail. Have fun decideing, If I needed a TV I think I'd go for the LED but thats just me!

Well I don't exactly have my face pressed against it :D it's hanging on the wall on the other side of my reloading bench which happens to be about 3' across, so it's probably about 4' viewing distance.

We bought an LG Plasma a couple years ago around superbowl time. 52" I think and it was around 700 at HHGregg. I chose plasma based on picutre quality and my room set up. The refresh rate on the plasmas is a lot better and makes watching sports and or fast motion a lot cleaner IMO. I havent really had a glare issue with my tv either and we have a patio door on one wall that lets in tons of light.

Ok, Basically what everyone has said here is true. If you have alot of direct sun a plasma especially the LG's will reflect quite a bit. A plasma does have a much better refresh rate and willnot get motion blur like you will see on a LCD or a LED. Plasmas are much more power hungry and heavier. I am avideo geek and went through this process a year ago. I ended up with a 65" LG plasma. It was the best overall for the money. If you play video games grab a LCD. LED are just LCD with an LED backlight so they have all the same drawbacks of a LCD. If you have a light controlled room there is no reason not to Go Plasma for just watching TV. If you have kids or you play video games and it is going to be in a very bright room go LCD. Either way once hooked up use a video disc to calibrate it and do not leave it on store torch mode you will thank me later.

I would go with Samsung. My brother got the 46" model at Frye's last summer. No problems with it at all. I'm looking at getting one now too. The people that worked at the electronics stores we went to seemed to favor Samsung for their personal TVs.

LG LCD. Best TV for the money IMO(and also pretty much every review I read when researching).

I'm not sure about the 32-40" models, but anything in the 47-55" range has great reviews(yes, different brands are better/worse depending on the size).

    Get 120hz true motion.

BTW, I'm sorry for your loss. :):

LOVE my 32" LG LCD. I didn't worry about anything over 720p because it wasn't meant for HDtv and is mostly used as my bedroom tv. I'd agree that you can't go wrong with an LG. Bought mine 2 1/2-3 years ago and haven't had any issue.
