Ok so some how... we ended up with Two locker sections from the Middle school. My wife is a teacher and she is all into creative storage ideas. One is working out amazingly well for canned goods storage etc. The other one is not really in all that great shape paint wise, but solid so it ended up in my walk in closet. It took 4 of us to move the things, they are solid heavy duty steel. I am guessing they are at least 30 years old.

So my thought was to use them as gun lockers and ammo storage. They would take quite some time to get into, and no one is just going to cart them off.

So any drawbacks that you can think of?

They would be great for keeping kids and grandkids out of the guns but would only stop the honest burglar/ snatch and grab type robbery. Fire resistance is an issue as well

When I outgrew my first gun storage cabinet, I converted it to ammo storage. I added shelves so that I didn't have to stack the boxes on each other. It also allowed me to organize the shelves by caliber.

As long as you put a decent locking mechanism on it and maybe bolt it to the floor/wall inside the closet, you’ll have as much protection from burglars as most “gun safes.”

I'd only suggest making sure they are secured to the floor. As top heavy as they may be, you'd want to make sure it wouldn't tip over. I'd suggest too securing somehow on top, like you secure a dresser to the wall.
