    Oh look, you want to be a sovereign entity? first lesson is you have to be able to defend yourself. I'd think that pretty much the entirety of human history would show anyone that. like pretty much everything from being mugged on the street to world war is that. You can't just put up a post in the ocean next door to someone else (who has guns/a navy), call it yours, and expect them to leave you be out of the kindness of their hearts. I bet they sure wish they were a part of some other nation that had a navy to defend them now.
