Anyone use varget for reloading 223 remington? I have some I can try with 40gr and 52gr sierra bullets I also have some 55gr hornady's. I looking for something to shoot in 100 yard benchrest. The rifle is a 1 in 12 twist remington 700. Thanks for any advice.

Varget and RE15 are both good powders for your prospective loads. You will probably get your best results with compressed maximum loads, but that is my experience with my rifle and just speculation in the end.

I have a number of recipes for Varget in .223 but they are for 1:7 twist on 20" barrels. 1:12 .223, really?

Edit: my .308 is 1:12 twist on a bullet that is 99 grains heavier.

Slow twist barrels on single shot and bolt action .223's are more common than you think. They'll stabilize everything up to 55's and sometimes 60's depending on the individual barrel, length, and velocity.

That explains that, I'm not trained on it. My recipes are for 69, 77, & 80s. I don't think I can help the OP.

    Thanks for the knowledge!

I'm running Varget under a 62 grain bullet out of a carbine with 1:9 twist barrel. I have been happy with the results. I'm going to order some 55 grain bullets to test as well.

the rifle is 223 varmint remington 700. It does well with 40gr and 52gr bullets. I have been using TAC powder with good results just like to try something different. I know some people like varget for the 308 guess I will give it a try.

I feel used. Unless you are really bored, since you already have the bullets and powder, why did you not just try it and report your results.

Maybe I just don't understand this forum thing....?

Will you at least post the results? Or is it all for nothing?

I have the same rifle, the load I use is a Hornady 53 gr. HP match bullets over 26.2 gr Varget. It gets me sub MOA groups at 100 yards. If I remember right, (load data is in the garage) I chronographed it at 3100 to 3150. For that load Hodgen's load data shows 24 gr min and 27 gr. max.

All of my 17 rem, 223 and 30-06 loads use Varget. It's been a very diverse rifle powder for me. Plus it's nice to only have to buy one kind of rifle powder. It is a bit of a pain at times loading it into the small neck of the 17 rem though. You better make sure it all drops before removing the funnel or you're in for a mess on the bench.

Thanks guys this is what I was looking for. It may be a few weeks before I get to test this load but I will post a report when it is done. I am glass bedding the stock next week.

Sorry Sloughfoot didn't mean to make you feel used just lookin for opinions on varget and the 223.:D

I had good results with 55 FMJ loads.

I stopped using it and switched to H335 when I got a Dillon progressive press. Varget would not meter consistently for me. The H335 throws the same charge every time.

I use both Varget and H335. I have three rifles in 223. Two are AR's and one is a bolt. There is plenty of load data out there for almost any bullet. Just follow the starting load data and develop it from there. I have about 15 H335 loads from 36 to 80 Gr. and about 15 Varget loads from 36 to 90 Gr. Enjoy.
