I am glad to see they did eat the cow. That wasn't made clear in the first story. Although the first story did use the word "slaughter" which infers normally something done to an animal about to be eaten, it isn't necessarily so.

Presuming they ate the cow is reasonable, but also presumptive. I was afraid that it was possibly a killing for no good reason, which I am glad it wasn't.
