This might be fun. With Veterans Day coming, let's recognize our family & friends that have served or are serving in the military!

MY Veteran would be my dad. He served in the 384th FA Bn, 103rd Infantry, US Army. He was in the ETO from November 1944 to July of 1945.

This is my grandmother's wall of veterans. My grandfather is in the middle. Starting at the upper left and going clockwise, my uncle, my mother, my cousin's son, and me.

My grandfather, MajGen Donald Smith, USAF.

He enlisted in 1938, but was selected for pilot training after the US entered WWII. In June 1944 his B-24 Liberator was shot up on a bombing mission over Romania, forcing his crew to bail out over Yugoslavia. Serbian Chetnik rebels helped him evade German capture until he could be returned to his squadron as part of "Operation Halyard".

My grandfather (standing, 2nd from left) with other US airmen and Chetnik rebels.

My grandfather (right) with US airman, Charlie Davis (left) and Chetnik captain Mihailo Paunovich (center). These three men would remain great friends for the rest of their lives.
(Any of you experts want to tell me what they're holding? Captured MP40s perhaps?)

He retired in 1978 as the Illinois ANG Chief of Staff, and passed away in 1998 at the age of 82.
