I am visiting from out of state this weekend to look for a place to live, and will be staying in a hotel. I do not currently have an LTC/CCW permit as I am from Illinois (I do have a vaild FOID). Is it legal for me to bring a pistol? I looked at the relevant law and states that one can be transported to an "abode" but I wasn't sure what there legal definition of one is, and if a Hotel room would meet it.

If you happen to have another State's non-resident license/permit (UT, AZ, FL, PA, etc) you may carry your firearm upon your person while in IN.

You can't have your loaded firearm in your vehicle - unload it and put it in a secure container. Mags can stay loaded and can stay near the firearm. Your hotel room is legal for you to have your firearm in as a SD weapon. You can carry around your hotel room, though - but don't leave the room into any of the common areas or you'll be breaking the law.

Just the fact that someone has to ask this question says a lot about our society doesnt it?

Well, he did say he is from Illinois and trying to get out though.

OP if you do not have a license you cannot carry it on your person. It needs to be unloaded and out of reach while in your vehicle. In your hotel room, I think you would be good to go. The shotgun would be perfectly fine loaded all the time I believe, I know it is for residents of Indiana

Excellent replies all around and thanks for the help. Unloaded and encased is how I'm use to transporting in IL, so that should be fine until I'm a resident and can get a permit.

Until you become a resident of another state, I'd recommend getting a non-resident permit from either Utah or Florida. Which one? I'm not sure of the differences, but once you move to IN, it adds to how many states you can carry in.

With the Utah permit, you must have a permit from your home state prior to being granted their permit.

Definitely says something about The Peoples Republic of Illinois....
I'm a refugee from there, still work there. (at work now).
Not sure about the Utah permit thing, I think I've seen ads in Illinois papers for out of state permit classes...

Come one over! I am still "technically" a Illinois resident but I have a house there and in Indiana. I work in Indiana and spend most of my time here in Indiana now. Next year I am going to convert my Illinois drivers license to an Indiana.
If you end up working in Indiana but still a Illinois resident for awhile you can still get an Indiana LTCH! I have one and the proccess is the same as it is for a regular IN resident. (You can only get a 4yr LTCH though). Very easy to do.
