    I need to know the way to pick up walleyes w/o getting cut on the gill plate...I caught one last year and it was small enough to grab around its body so I got lucky...thanks.

    Most walleye, in my experience, are still of a size that you can pick them up like a blue gill. You do have to be careful, but it always worked for me. Just make sure you push down the spines on their back. We fish them in NW Ontario, so they are pretty decent sized as far as walleye go.

    I do wear a neoprene glove, leather would also work.

    I slide a finger behind their gill plate then up towards their mouth and lift. You can kind of see my hand in this pic.

    That was a "Roland Martin/Al Lindner" style pic. The fish only weighed a little under 6lbs. We were having some fun with camera angles that year, lol.
