This is why I don't go to South Bend

I always stop at the Chick fil A on the way around. We go to the Morris sometimes as well, but that is about it. When I was a kid we went to South Bend on shopping trips. To this day we still refer to that whole area as South Bend even though usually we are going to Mishawaka.

Born, raised and educated in South Bend. Believe it or not, it used to be a really great place to live. We had this crazy blend of ethnic groups that just worked. There were Hungarians and Polish on the West Side. When you got invited to a Polish wedding, people would be envious because of the food. I had Serbians on my paper route that would give me a small glass of home made wine on those cold nights when I had to collect payment. I had a Hungarian women on my route that would always hand my a bag of home baked cookies and pastries. The best. Mr. Woods, a big burly African-American man was our "Trash Man". When we were kids we would wait for his truck to come down the alley and he would give each of us a piece of Beeman's chewing gum. I know things weren't perfect and I know things have changed, but some of the kids of many of those people are still around. I've taught them and seen how they've turned out. Mostly great kids. A thought I'd like to bring up about violence in South Bend is this; If you get yourself shot in South Bend (not always but mostly) it's because you're doing something you shouldn't be doing with people you shouldn't be doing it with in places you shouldn't be.

    Sound reasoning.

Today,I asked a black friend who lived in SBN for years why the violence is so high? He said the first wave was when the city of Michigan City tore down the inner-city projects to make room for the Bluechip Casino, and never rebuilt them. Those folks went to either Chicago or South Bend to relatives for a home.He said Chicago has been tearing down some of the LARGE ones in the CG neighborhoods, and alot have moved to SBN and Detroit with relatives bring more gang activity with them.

Some assert the same impact if taking place in Lafayette.
