I'm in the market for a new gun and right now I've narrowed it down to some used police trade ins from Swiss police departments. These are available on Gunbroker and my question is this; What am I getting into with a used service gun from the 90's? Am I going to be reconditioning this thing as soon as I get it? or will I be asking for trouble with worn out parts? From the pictures (bear in mind that I haven't been able to lay my hands on this thing and it makes me kinda uncomfortable buying something I've never held) it looks fine, and the picture of the barrel rifling looks fine and no apparent rust...
I'm looking to benefit from everyone's experience.

    Thanks

If you don't feel comfortable, don't do it. It's a pretty good rule of thumb.

Which model are you looking at? P6? P226? P228? In general, the used SIGS are good to go, but like everything else it depends on price, condition, etc.

I wouldn't hesitate to pick one up. A good friend has one of the police trade ins and it looks to have been shot little and is built like a tank anyway. It runs like clockwork. Plus, the European manufacture imports are generally considered to have a tiny tick better quality than the US manufacture later guns.

Looked those up on GB. P220's. Probably nothing wrong with them but I would just make sure that if it shows up at your FFL that you can return it if you or your FFL see an issue with it. After shipping and FFL fee you can probably find one locally for about the same price or close to it if you take some time. At least that way you could handle and look over it before making the decision.

If you are saving enough from buying new the cost for some springs or such is a small price to pay to rebuild a gun. Also check out the link below. They have good prices on trade in weapons now and then

GB also has Swiss trade in P6s and P228s. I wouldn't be afraid of them. You can always send it to Sig for the Sig Service Plan if you aren't happy with it.

If you buy a used Sig you can send it to Sig and have them service it back to like new condition and I think they even give it a 1 year warranty. Not 100% on that but thats the rumor Ive heard. The service plan also includes the installation of night sights.

Thanks to everyone for the input. I'm looking specifically at the p228s and p225s. I'm looking for economy all the way around for the price of the gun and the cost to shoot (which is why I'm looking for 9mm). I'll be saving my foray into .45s for a 1911 of some sort.
    While I'm at it I may as well ask;
What about the SP2022? it looks like a HK USP and feels pretty much the same, is that where I should be looking for my economy?

The SP2022 is a great choice for a budget Sig. I have a few LEO friends who carry them and swear by them.

Stay away from the P250s! That whole platform from what I have heard is plagued with problems. Stick with the classic Sigs or the SP2022 and I think youll be fine.

Few months ago I traded for a police trade in P6. My thoughts are that I should have never sold my first one. The P6/225 is probably the smoothest shooting single stack 9 out there. The balance in one's hand is incredible. Those 228s you mentioned are a proven and reliable platform. Both models have tons of fanboys. You CAN build them up into true raceguns, which I plan to with the P6 I got, but they're usually darn fine defensive pistols right out of the box.

I have a P6 trade in that was in ok shape when I got it. I reblued the slide myself and put on a set of NS from CDNN and now it looks pretty darned good. A lot of these guns were carried a lot and shot a little so cosmetically they may have some mars but mechanically they are in pretty good shape. I didn't know that there were P228s for sale now. I'd love to get one of those. :yesway:

If they are European police trade ins I would feel pretty confident. Most nations in Europe are God less, Socialist, eco-weenies and because of that the police do not train with their firearms. They have to account for every cartridge fired and are not even allowed to take their weapons home. Unless they are part of a special anti-terrorist unit that gets a bit of training I would say all you would have would be holster wear. As a plus the Swiss Sigs have the cross and the shield stamp and heel mounted magazine release (which I love by the way, Hmmm. Maybe I have a bit of God less, socialist, eco-weenie in me after all!) All jokes aside whether you are dealing with Smith revolvers or Sig and Glock police trade ins I personally think they are one of the best bargains around.

IMO, you cannot go wrong with a Sig. I don't care if it's new or used.

While there are other guns that are just as reliable (Glock, HK, XD, etc.), Sigs are dead accurate for what they are (combat gun, not a bullseye pistol), and the feel great in the hand.

I would never feel underarmed with a Glock, but they feel like I'm holding a 2x4.

I do not have a P6, but I do have a P225, which is essentially the same as a P6. Some people will claim that a P6/P225 is inferior to other 9mm's because the mag only holds 8 rounds. But, I know how to change a magazine out and I always carry a spare one or two with me. But, for that matter, I don't feel underarmed with a 5 or 6 shot snubby .357 magnum either with a couple of speedloaders at the ready.
