    This is a really thought provoking piece from an American citizen from Finland. He makes a number of points that flat out refute the anti-Nordic model opponents in the US and makes the point in favour of the Nordic model for the US. While it's not my cup of tea, he certainly lays to rest the usual arguments against it that we hear incessantly. Some aspects of their model would certainly work well in the US and alleviate many of the burdens currently shouldered by US businesses and individuals. And the tax rates aren't really that much higher than what we currently have. Guess it's just a matter of what you want to see your tax dollars spent on and who would benefit most from it.

    See? That's what I'm talking about. If she were transplanted here...she'd have Kanji tattoos, pajama bottoms, and an "Orange County Choppers" logo stenciled over her lady parts.

    Some things just don't translate, culturally.

    (I can tell it's an old photo, though. Today she'd prolly be wearing a burqa).

    If you really want to see how these countries manage such awesome safety nets, look no further than immigrants. These countries are well known for bringing in migrants when the economy is up, taxing them like natives, then immediately deporting them when the economy goes down and job loss occurs. This "fairness" is largely funded by screwing migrants.

    The purpose of our Federal Government, as found in the Preamble of the Constitution, is to "establish Justice, insure domestic Tranquility, provide for the common defense, promote the general Welfare, and secure the Blessings of Liberty to ourselves and our posterity."

    Promote does not mean to provide. If it works for Finland that's great for Finland. If people want to live under that type of system they should consider obtaining citizenship and relocating. Finland's system is different than ours. I don't say better or worse it's just different and that's ok. I prefer to stick with what was intended (not that we're anything close at this point but I'd prefer to move closer than farther away).

    Now I will give them this much. Their knife designs are the essence of simplicity. They have utility, while staying classy, have ablaze geometry that promotes durability, and the grips are more ergonomic. I'll take a puuko over a Bowie any day. But since we're not talking knives, I don't care much ehat Finksnd does. Finland can be Finland, and the U.S.A. can get back to what it was supposed to be, like in that Preamble thingy from that one old document that Phylodog quoted.

    The only thing Scandinavian that we should emulate over here is their educational system, with Finland's being the best in the world.
    Also, as previously observed, it's greatly amusing that the writer feels compelled to pen an article extolling the utopia that is Scandinavia that he still decided to leave for the dystopia that the U.S. supposedly is.

    Yes, Finnish knife designs are great!

    I wonder if the Finnish government facilitates transferring Finnish knives from those who produce/pay for them to those who want them but want someone else to pay for them.

    You know what, you go have fun with those Nordic countries, I WILL PASS. I have many long time friends in Sweden and Norway, they ALL ADORE the US and aspire to eventually move here, even one who is currently in the Swedish military.

    Their taxes are lower and their government benefits are higher for a reason. We, their allied super power, provide super power level defense so that their socialist system can be propped up and not have all their tax dollars going into defense. If it wasn't for us they would be speaking Russian in short order. The way things are going with them committing cultural suicide, they might be speaking Arabic and celebrating Sharia law.

    You know that an article is good when;
    a) the author starts off signalling their intent to respond to strawmen
    b) they think that comparing their country's tax rate with NYC is a fair comparison
    c) they think that the purpose of taxes is to fund services for them
    d) they keep talking about Nordic states broadly, but only use Finland for specifics
    e) "Nordic countries have produced no Steve Jobs, no General Motors, and no medical breakthroughs. In short, American entrepreneurs, scientists, and other innovators have changed the world while Nordic countries fall short of taking risks and working hard" - and the author then tries to compare that to Volvo, Nokia and " Supercell and Rovio, creators of the ubiquitous video games Clash of Clans and Angry Birds"
    f) absolutely no critical discussion, or mention of the disadvantages of their system
    g) the author is strangely silent on their reasons for emigrating to the US from Finland, and renouncing their Finnish citizenship


    And then there is this;
