Just started Black Mirror on NF. Still trying to form an opinion on it. every episode is different story/actors/etc. First episode left me scratching my head debating if I should continue. 2nd/3rd episodes kinda blew me away. Not really science fiction, but futuristic stuff that you could imagine becoming reality. real psychological twister, kinda dark.

I LOVE Black Mirror. That some high brow stuff right there. It's something you have to pay attention too and think about afterwards. I can only take one episode per day. It's technically science-fiction, but it's more about the unintended consequences of technology, that we haven't considered. Like in S1/E3.... think about, before watching the episode, how cool you'd have thought it would be to have the ability to record everything with your eyes? Now, doesn't seem so cool, does it? lol

Is that the theme that the show is based on? I mean that certainly stood out in episodes 2/3 (only seen the 1st 3, no spoilers! :) ). It does a good job of making you both hate certain characters, while really feeling empathy for them. the character development is tremendous for just one-hour segments. I agree it's not binge-watchable. Hard to say why... kinda emotionally tired after watching it. ... time to switch over to some Futurama or Archer! haha. Plus, I guess it not being a true series it doesn't leave you wondering what happens next.

    The Lives of Others

    This is really good.

But don't rely on the description at the link:
This Oscar(r)-winning thriller (Best Foreign Language Film, 2006) tells the erotic story of an East German couple whose every intimate moment is being monitored by the Secret Police hoping to learn information that could destroy their lives.

Whoever wrote that should be slapped. It completely misses the theme of the movie, makes it sound like a porn flick. Yeah there's some sex, but the movie is about how the mechanism that a society uses to make sure everyone follows the politically correct line (and destroys them if they don't) also uses the same mechanism to destroy the politically correct because "no one can be that perfect;" as well as destroying those who simply get in the way.

The director had a thing for authenticity, to the extent possible he used actual East German artifacts for all the props in the movie, and some of the actors had lived under the regime, including the actor who played the Stasi officer. Interestingly the director (Donnersmarck) was not able to use the actual Stasi prison, which is now a memorial, to represent itself in the movie. The director (Knabe) of the memorial refused to let him shoot it there be cause (per Wikipedia) "Knabe objected to 'making the Stasi man into a hero' and tried to persuade Donnersmarck to change the film. Donnersmarck cited Schindler's List as an example of such a plot development being possible. Knabe's answer: 'But that is exactly the difference. There was a Schindler. There was no Wiesler.'"[SUP][

Keeping that in mind, it's worthwhile to watch. Soundtracks is all in German, with subtitles. One of the jokes loses a bit in translation, but not fatal.

I really, really like that movie, but, there's nothing erotic about it. And thanks for the background - I never knew about the prison.

As for Black Mirror, each season have a theme that ties together the episodes. I'm not sure, but I think we discussed it on INGO some time ago. My take is that it's very much like what I imagine the Twilight Zone was in the 1960's and very topical and mildly terrifying. Now, the Twilight Zone is good, but not trenchant because the threat of imminent nuclear war is not here.

It's written by Charlie Brooker who has some rather good other commentary shows (nothing like Black Mirror), if you like British stuff - look for his yearly "wipe" shows on YouTube.

This one's especially for Indiucky; it's on NetFlix now.

I watched it last night, and like always, Werner Herzog make a compelling documentary.

I've seen it four times....I am all about leaving things be but I can't help but think I would have tried to chisel that Cave Bear Skull out that had been crystalized if I would have found that cave......

"There seems to have been something here....You see???"

"I found the cave and there was nothing there when I found it...."

    "Are you sure???"

    "Oui...."

    slide_31.jpg

That would look so cool on a mantle.....I liked the dreams the one dude had after spending time in the cave....He had nightmares of animal attacks...Sylvain sent me a link to the replica they are making of it....Soon to be open IIRC...
