On a serious note I'm not sure why 357 Sig wasn't more popular than it was. (as an old 357 Mag fan) I know when I was at FLETC on recerts the Secret Service guys loved it. So I was surprised when their leadership went to 9mm and Glock ad they had been invested in SIG for almost 30 years.

I have read, I think in Ayoob articles (don't quote me) that there were problems with premature wear. Also and this is just my opinion, those things are LOUD and with 9's being effective, easier to shoot, and cheaper, why go with .357?

Oh they 357 Sig is loud alright. I watched a video of the church shooting an there was no doubt when Mr Wilson shot it wasnt a standard 9mm.

Loud with a huge fire ball. Back when the cartridge was popular, a few folks attempted to run them in competition. Toward the end of the matches, with 80-100 rounds shot, the shooter was pretty tired of it and the RO's too. :)

Depending on the ammo, it does make a really nice fireball...
I have heard some people complain at indoor ranges about the noise.

Well, come to find out I already have one, "kinda". I have a Sig 229 in .40 ( like used in Furguson, Mo.). So I only need a conversion bbl, mags are same.

Texas DPS used P226 Sigs and 357 Sig for years too, but when they went with the ultimately aborted attempt with M&P Shields they went to 9mm. The ditched to the Shields and went back to Sig for P320s, but stayed with the 9mm for ammo.

I was referring to Fed LE agencies. as far as state police agencies MT, SD, DE TN and NC (ND recently dropped it for 9) NM dropped the M&P 357 for M&P9 and as you mentioned TX went through an issue with M&Ps so went back to Sig. (with TX history with SIG the attempt to move away from them surprised me as well.

Because without the incredible technology now available, that added velocity allowed 357 sig to be one of the best service cartridges if you had to deal with hard barriers like car doors and other things. It's still an outstanding round, and serves far more of a purpose than 40 ever did. It's just that 9mm has now caught up where it's almost as effective.

    I heard it was a Sig 229

    In .357 Sig

I have a friend in Texas who says that the Texas Department of Public Safety (DPS) was issued and carried .357 SIG for many years and that they had some good feedback with it.
I got away from that caliber in mid-2009 (after the economic down turn of 2008) and just got back to playing around with it some this past summer... buying a .357 SIG barrel for a Glock 22.
Snappy little round...and very accurate too!

Yes you're cool now. :D And just to get things going.....the .357 sig is a just a pumped up 9mm and the cost of the ammo is too much. You're welcome. :D

Each to their own, but I like having .357 magnum performance in a semi-auto small framed pistol like a Sig P229 357.
You're not going to see any 9mm pistol shoot very many "pumped up" 125 grain bullets at .357 Magnum velocity (if at all) for very long.

As to ammo price, if you look, you can get reasonably priced .357 Sig ammo for the range.
    and then for carry,
    Underwood
357 Sig 125 Grain Bonded Jacketed Hollow Point
    Muzzle Velocity: 1475 fps
    Muzzle Energy: 604 ft lbs

Love the 357 but true (TRUE) NATO spec 9mms 124gr comes in at 1,200 FPS where some (SOME) 357 (both mag and Sig) comes in a little under advertised velocity.

So either one would probably leave a mark!

I'm with you, sir ! My Sig229 in 357Sig is my most carried metal-framed handgun. If it's too "snappy" for some, I say to them: hit the gym ! :D

Yes, it true that some ammo tests lower in fps than advertised.
But in reading the customer reviews of Underwood ammo, they tend to chrono higher than advertized if anything.

I’ve toyed with picking up a .357 Sig barrel for my G23 just because. I might have to do that just to see how the caliber shoots.

    I have a Glock 32, which is basically a Glock 23 with a .357 Sig barrel.
    It's a sweet shooting pistol.
I'd suggest getting an OEM Glock .357 Sig barrel for your 23.
    You'll like it.

Also, the 40SW mags will work fine.
