So I recently purchased a barrel for my first build and was so excited when it arrived in the mail. Only to be disappointed (possibly) when I looked down the barrel and saw what looks like a defect in the barrel when I first saw it. It's about a quarter of an inch long and a mm at its widest. My uncle lead me to realize that it is at the gas port. Which made me feel slightly better about it. I tried looking at my other AR and can't really see it to well.

Should it be just a hole like the outside of the barrel or is this somewhat common. It basically goes across one whole land almost perpendicular to the rifling.

Barrel is a stainless steel 10.5 223 wylde with carbine length gas. Called the manufacturer/seller and they said that this is news to them on this barrel (sounded like they had different barrel that this had happened before) They want me to take a picture of it and send it to them. They also stated that I should get 1 MOA.

Almost looks like to me the press was running in to fast and punched out a sliver of the barrel.

If it's the gas port, it should be easy to find out.
    Remove the forward hand guard.
    Follow the gas tube.
See where tube goes into barrel.

Just so I'm sure I'm following you, you think that when drilling the gas-port they pushed too hard on the drill bit and broke a chunk out of the inside of the barrel?

That's pretty much impossible. Steel doesn't break away from the back side like wood does.

What is much more likely is that the gas-port intersects with the rifling and is playing tricks on your eyes, or there is a burr from the drilling process playing tricks on your eyes.

Most importantly, what should you do? First, try to find somebody with a borescope and get a closer look. If you can't then I would suggest contacting the manufacturer, make them aware of the situation, but say you will try firing it to see if there are any further problems. Firing it can get rid of burrs if there are any. This way you don't hassle the manufacturer with sending back a barrel that is most likely just fine before you know if there really is a problem or not.
