Video was a good reminder to have pepper spray on you or nearby.

Years back, I was forced to walk a snow covered deep country road the last couple miles home. Barking dog loose in the middle of the night had me spooked. I carried a lit road flare. Must have worked, as I didn't have to shoot anything. Much less get in a gun battle for killing someone's security critter.

I remember some years back when a guy in Carmel was threatened by a dog, so he shot a warning shot into the ground to scare it.

He got in trouble for firing the warning shot, but wouldn't have if he had actually shot the dog in self defense.

So the moral of the story, boys and girls, is SSS!

Dog? What dog? I'll keep my eyes open in case he shows up.

After an encounter with a pit-bull that ate a lady's yap dog last year, I always carry a knife and sometimes also pepper spray. If a dog chomps on a kid's arm, I'm pithing that (redacted).

Looked into this some time ago, you can't shoot them even on your own property unless you can prove they are damaging something like livestock or attacking someone. That said, as pointed out by Cameramonkey, SSS is the best rule unless someone hears the gunshots, reports the dog missing, and then aggressively follows up with the local law.
