i have a XDM 9mm and i love it. a while back i sent it in for a lighter trigger and night sights. would it now be considered a modified gun? if not then what is?
Any gun that has ammo in it is modified. As mentioned, any altered component is "modified"
For instance if the barrel of a Glock blew up and was repaired with a factory barrel-then typically that is NOT modified.
But if u put in an aftermarket barrel thats threaded or stainless-then its modified.
Most competitions have a list of "allowed" changes or modifications. USPSA and IDPA allow sight changes and "internal work" and still qualify for Production or Stock Service Pistol (check rule books for exact language).
In general you have to change something visible about the pistol for it to be "modified" ie: add a mag well or comp or lighten the slide. BUT as I said check the books to be sure.
Seems sights, grips etc are considered more of a preference alteration than a "modification".
