We use oak and cherry. We've had some huge cherry trees in the woods that have died and they make great firewood. Burns hot enough that the chimney doesn't get full of creosote.

In terms of the entire wood heat process, red oak is my favorite. Bucks easy, splits easy, stacks easy and burns well. I found the red oak trees to be the among the straightest with the fewest knots and hard to split parts.

I'm on a Facebook group and someone had a downed pine tree in their yard. Said whoever wanted it for firewood could come and get it. Seemed surprised when no one jumped on the offer.

Pine is not a thing here where in the western states that is almost all that they burn. They've learned to clean their chimneys routinely.

Ya gotta be careful with Osage orange (hedge) that stuff can do some real damage if you or your stove aren’t up to the task. JMO
