I have the original wood grips on my Colt GI but I added Pearce finger groove inserts. Gives me the best of both worlds.

I switch them up and have a little bit of everything for looks...but slim grips are my "go to" for comfort.

Right now both my 1911's are wearing aggressive textured grips. I like the really gripy grips, the kind you get a really good hold on. Like the VZ alien grips. But they are not great for carry because if you don't use the right kind of holster that ruff surface can rub you raw.

Compromise are the Raptor nylon 15% glass filled grips you can pick up on eBay for about $25. Great feel, good grip texture but not as abrasive as VZ aliens. If I don't use the real gripy textured grips then plain old rubber grips work best for me, the kind without the finger groves.

You should try some vz Operator IIs sometime. Wow. They make the aliens feel downright smooth and cuddly.

Grip options: Just one more thing that keeps the 1911 towering over the competition.

Some of the grips I have had made cost more than the guns they are on. Slabs of Turquoise, giraffe bone inlayed with sterling silver, dead elephant ivory, ultra-rare Koa, etc. You don't just buy great grips, you commission them from some of the finest craftsmen in the gun industry.

And to mix it up a little bit, some CZ75 grip porn too. These are Turkish walnut, inlayed with stirling silver.

That bottom one by esmerelda? That pattern looks like her work.

ETA: One more thing that keeps 1911s above their competition -- the joy of real craftsmanship. Good 1911s and many of their parts are still made by hand, by real craftsmen(/women). I love that and will happily pay more for it.

Yes, the grips on the Para Carry 9 are from Esmeralda, from back when she did custom work. I mixed her Celtic knot design with a custom center logo, and had her put it on spalted maple. She stopped doing custom orders shortly after I got those made because her work was becoming more popular and she started getting backlogged. I'm not sure if she will accept custom designs again?

Standard answer now is no to custom, but I'm sure she could be persuaded.
