.30 is great except that most designs have short case necks. Entirely unsuited to wheel weights!

10 of the 15 I can see right now are the .30 caliber variety-the rest are .45 caliber or .22 Just need an Eddystone, a Jungle carbine, an M1 Garand, an 03A3, a Dragunov and when I hit the lottery or some unknown rich Uncle dies they will all be going into a big gun safe. Right now they are just on a wish list.

I enjoy the round as well.

The saiga 308 is the smoothest shooting 308 I've ever fired. The PTR91 is a little rougher shooting, but is an exceptionally easy rifle to connect with.

The sights on the 91 remain my favorite sights I've ever used. My eyes are dodgy and I'm able to shoot as well with them as I am with a magnified optic.

I have great respect, and a use for most of the 7.62 family of rounds.
One however, is a puny little under-charged and anemic round, barely worth lumping in with the rest.

I won't get rid of it, just because it's fun, but the diminutive 7.62x38R is like a step-child to the rest of the family.

I like the 30 caliber rifles. I have a Marlin 336 in 30-30; Ruger M77 in 30-06; Browning A-bolt in 30-06; Browning BAR in 30-06; Rem 700 BDL in .308; Ruger M77 in .300 Win Mag; a 1917 that was rechambered to 308 norma mag.

I had a 1917 30-06 with a medium Douglas barrel, Bishop stock and a Redfield peep. Absolutely a gorgeous rifle, the smith that sporterized it done one heck of an impeccable job. During load development I hit it's sweet spot putting 5rds into one ragged little hole at 50yds. Sold it a few years later to get a girl a DVD player...dumb youth.

If I had to fight with it and given a choice I'd pick-up a M14 or an AK47 before I'd pick-up a M16. That's just me and I'm as big an American Patriot as they come. I love the 7.62 x "what ever". The 5.56 is more of a varmint round, a good round, but a varmint round none the less. IMO

    .30 cals.

While there are various bores, larger and smaller, that do the job for a specific situation, the 7.62 variants from the .30 Carbine to the .30-.378 WM seem to have proven themselves the most versatile all around caliber made so far.
