If you have your heart set on a JM Marlin I'd probably go for the 1894 Cowboy model due to the rifling. The standard models have the micro grove and the cowboy version has standard rifling. I have read that the ballard rifling is more accurate and don't doubt it. I have standard '94 in .44 and a cowboy in .45. the .45 is more accurate and I'm not sure it's just because of being a different caliber.

    Had a JM .44.
    Shot well.
    Sold it.

Like a Ruger auto better. Not as accurate....not as good a trigger. But feel and look I prefer and inside of 100 its good enough. Not the carbine either......sporter ( fingergroove ).

Another oddball.....have not seen a Rem 788 in .44 mag for a long time.

One day I am going to buy a lever .44 mag. I use to shoot a single shot H&R .44 before the rules changes and love the round for deer hunting.

I have experience with marlins as I have a 39A. The shop I frequent sell Henry and Rossi. The Henry is finished really nice but for some reason I have a draw to the JM stamped Marlin.

    Curious to hear others preferences.

    Marlin 1894... an older one.

Them henry’s are beautiful, I’m definitely interested in the new side and tube loading models.
For now, the only calibers they are offering in side-gate loaders are .30-30 Winchester, .35 Remington, and .38-55.

More calibers may be added in the future, but for now...it's only those three.

    .
One thing I always do to Marlins I'm keeping is remove the mag tube and chamfer the loading end.

    Here's my .02:
Rossi kicks like a 12 gauge. Personally I wouldn't want to shoot it outside of wearing a coat for padding. I've heard though that they are tanks and you can't break them.

I would stick with Marlin. Older (pre rem) if you can find it, or newer than 2018.

I have had 3 marlins and really liked them all. two were 336 .30-.30's and one a .444marlin. have never had a problem with any.
