I've decided to start gathering parts to build an AR. This includes the things
I will need to load 223. For those that load 223, what is your favorite powder?

I would appreciate that, thank you.
I've already picked up a bag of Hornady 55g FMJ BT.
Looking through some manuals and a couple of Google searches,
    I'm leaning toward AA2230, H/IMR 4895, or maybe BL-C(2).

I've had good results in bolt guns and AR's with 2230, Varget and 4895. I use Varget for my .308 loads, so that's what I'm stocking up on now.

I think that anyone of them will provide you with a good, accurate load after a little bit of experimentaion.

So far I have gotten my best groups using CMR-100 [Canadian equivalent of 4895] with 69 gr. SMK using 23.0 grains and WSR small rifle primers and Winnie cases through a 1-9 twist. This was a load I got off of the New Jersey HiPower Shooters website. Velocity is 2800 fps. Tried some 2230C a couple of weeks ago, dirty for an AR [at least mine] will go back to the Kanuck stuff as I have pretty much a lifetime supple [bought ahead of time]. 2230C does seem to have promise in a custom .223 bolt rifle using 77 SMK, or 75 Hornady Amax bullets with CCI # 450 small rifle magnum primers. Only the Shadow knows.

I use Ramshot Tac because it's cheap ($110/8LB OR $18/1LB), it meters great and my RCBS Chargemaster throws it great.

Some say its only good with heavier bullets (>55gr), but I found it's great with all that I've tried.

I like AA 2520, but I use heavier bullets than you're talking about. It works great with 69gr and 75gr match bullets.

I have never tried to load lighter bullets for .223

I tried it out today and my aa2230 with 24 gr worked fine. my gun isn't ment to be a real tack driver or long range, just a fun small plinker. i shot 50rds or so with no porblem. as far as finding the pouder i got mine in bluffton at 21 century. i saw your in n/w indiana so that may be close to you. good prices and good people

I use 4064 for all my rifle ammo .223, 308, 30-06 and 7.62x39. I can buy one powder to do it all. This is only hear say but I understand that long range competition shooters like 4064 the best. I can make rounds that mimic federal gold medal match for my 308 and that is why I use it.

OK, first post so I'll stick my neck out. I use VV powders as much as possible. I've used H335 for 223 and it works fine, just has a ammonia smell. VV 133 is my favorite powder for 223. The powder was made for that round. Vv is EXPENSIVE powder, no doubt, BUT is also the cleanest burning powder I've used - and that experience includes Winchester, Hodgen, IMR, AA. I buy in bulk from Powder Valley Inc.
