I fear if I do not get this off my chest, I will have an aneurysm.

Quick background: I work for a large health insurance company in a high-crime metropolitan area. I have my IN carry permit which has reciprocity in the state I am employed.

So in response to the CT shooting, my company releases a 1 page email emphasizing the company's "zero tolerance" policy, and assures employees that all types of weapons are banned from company property. In the event there is an active shooter, we are instructed to notify the police. Did I mention I work on the 11th floor with no easy escape route?

So, the Constitutionalist Libertarian in me immediately takes over. He tells me to hit that little 'Reply All' button. He tells me to pass along any number of statistics on the ineffectiveness of gun bans. He tells me to point out the lunacy of such restrictions. And most of all, he tells me to gently explain to policy makers that gun bans do not make people more secure; they make victims.

But then the realist takes over. He tells me there is no reasoning with people like this. He tells me that this email is nothing more than a legal team's CYA. And he tells me to speak the truth would result in being labeled a "gun nut" and "dangerous".

Considering the nature of our business, the malcontent of our customers and employees alike, and the negative press we regularly receive, an active shooter is not outside the realm of possibilities. But I fear our organizational leaders, like so many others, continue to have their heads in the proverbial sand.

tl;dr- Gun bans at work are stupid

Off topic: Where can one obtain an INGO patch or sticker? I am thinking it would look nice on my range bag or rifle case.

I work in a very large corporation and it has been my experience that if they wanted your opinion, they would have asked for it. And once they've made a decision and an announcement, they're really done with the debate (if there was any). It's frustrating.

I have been face with the "No guns in the Company supplied vehicle" for years. I never paid it any mind. I am an HVAC tech and really have no trouble finding work. My job takes me into areas that most sane folks avoid at all cost. I have been in many altercations in my 44 years. Pan handlers to really bad people and having my pistol with me has deterred all but a few of the more nutty individuals. Once you have had to point it at someone in fear or anger, you are never without it.
I do not broadcast my EDC and keep it hidden when possible. We (entire family..adults) all carry. We carry everywhere................Period.

Hitting the REPLY ALL and sending the email would result in you becoming the next target.
I agree that the COMPANY is CYA. Makes me want to walk up and ask them in an active shooter situation would they run, would they hide? Or would they be willing to take defensive stand?
The more people I talk with at work are on our side! Interesting!

since the shooter killed himself, people have no one to blame or put behind bars. So what do they do? They blame an object (guns) as the main accomplace. So sad....

Same situation for me, very large corporation. All decisions are made by accountants that have no clue what business we are actually in. Then the lawyers decide how much info can be sent to the troops in the field. Guns are a "zero tolerance" issue, unless your in Alaska.

I thought the southside of Chicago was rough, but apparently it's Alaska. Personally I'd rather try to reason with a bear than a crack head......more living brain cells and better odds of surviving.

There is a false sense of security in this country and that is why most people react the way they do, employers like yours do not care what happens to us so the only thing that is important to them is that they would be liable if you would be allow to carry wile at work. I wish we would live in a world without violence and without bad guys I Truly do but early in life my family and I experience that is not the case also while a have a lot of respect and appreciation for our police they take time to get to us, I also experience hopelessness and my friends is not a good thing. Been able to protect your family and yourself is something that I'm very thankful for and I hope we can continue to do it in the future.

Sorry, but not a very good analogy, since the brain cells of the bear are working just fine, telling him he is hungry, and that you are food. Considering the bear is "king" of his domain, you "will" become dinner if you try to reason with him. :D

Many insurance companies will demand a no gun policy as part of their condition of insurance. I once had a pro-gun friend who owned a Ford dealership. He told me that he was required to place no gun signs for his customers. He didn't like it, but was strong- armed by Ford into doing so. I once worked in a gun shop, where a new owner put out the word that his insurance company would not allow employees to carry firearms. I countered with a suggestion that the owner drop his insurance company and get insurance through the NRA. Eventually, his insurance company caved.

Smart move to not hit "reply to all." Chances are you wouldn't have finished out your workday before the company, which has no problem attempting to infringe upon your rights, will gladly exercise theirs and escort you out the door since this is a right-to-work state.

I understand and empathize with your situation. State law makes my work environment a gun free zone. We are supposed to feel safe because we have armed security, but security would NEVER get to our portion of the building before dozens of victims were killed. Plus, we have to park off-site in an area that I've NEVER seen monitored or guarded.

Thankfully I work for a small business and one of the owners open carries. Personally, I'd treat company policy as a suggestion with an overall policy of Don't Ask, Don't Tell. Just know that if something ever does happen and you're placed in a situation of defending yourself and co-workers, expect to lose your job in the days following.
