So, I've decided that I want to try a couple pistol matches this year. I have no idea where to start though. What is the difference between uspsa, idpa and ipsc? Where would I go to compete( hopefully not too far from huntington)? Is there a registration site or something?

as I'm sure this is a fairly common question, feel free to direct me to another thread
    thanks in advance.

What is the difference between uspsa, idpa and ipsc?

USPSA is the more or less the domestic version of the international IPSC organization.

IDPA and USPSA are different and I will let someone else explain that one.

Also Hillside in Roanoke has a newbie training class for beginners and they are having some indoor matches next one is Jan 25th.

At Ft Wayne Rifle and Revolver club (which is actually in Harlan) we have a match every 3rd Sunday March thru October. You are welcome at any of those. Just show up and check with the rangemaster.

We also have a Thursday night practice league every other thursday night at 5pm (I believe it was the 1st and 3rd Thursday of the month.

You will find their schedule in the link below.

You can call Hillside for details on the training and league.

Once you are comfortable with basic range safety related to competition, I think that either IDPA or USPSA is a great starting point. IDPA will be a little bit lower pressure for the "new" shooter, just by nature, but either are just fine. And the people will be helpful for the most part (and if they are not, just post their names here ;)

You live in a pretty ideal spot. About 45 minutes away from both Ft Wayne and Warsaw. Only an 1hr 15min to Atlanta. All those clubs have good USPSA matches.

Warsaw and Atlanta also have steel challenge which is a good way to start as well. There is little, if any, movement or reloading during steel challenge. It's basically stand in a box and shoot 5 steel plates.

    Warsaw's website with match details.

I'll jump here to say that you never feel more welcome that at a USPSA match. I've been involved in many traditional sports and outdoor sports and have never ever felt as welcome as I have shooting USPSA. Come out and try it. As long as you have the basics of using a gun you will have no other issues. Just make sure you find the organizers of any match and let them know you are a new shooter. Let the RO of your squad know it too. Then start shaking hands and making friends. You'll enjoy yourself.
