While double+ your listed budget I just have to do this.....

Double plus jumps into that handmade by a person that you can shake their hand category. I would personally need another two or three years with cheaper factory pistols just to know what to want in the custom built. I put a lot more miles on my Glocks each year than I've ever put into 1911s.

    Dan Wesson Silverback

Dan Wesson Silverback. Always have wanted one.

i have a DA Wesson Specialist and a Silverback you can try but they are both .45 ACP.

I bought a DW Silverback early last year, and I absolutely *LOVE* it. No regrets whatsoever, it has been 100% reliable with zero malfunctions, shoots like a tack driver and looks great!!!

I just went to the DW web site however and it looks like they are discontinued! Dang! Maybe you can still find one in the wild that has not yet been sold, otherwise, as has been mentioned, find a gently used one.

    Here's mine:

Phalanxarmory.com is less expensive on all three than Buds. And it’s a Veteran owned company..
Thanks for the info. I was not aware of that web site/company. I only mentioned Bud's because they are familiar to most people and I figured they would have one of the better selections. That's great that Phalanxarmory is run by Veterans! :rockwoot:

Looks like Phalanxarmory does not have that particular Kimber model. They do not have the ECO in stock. And they don't have the particular Colt railgun either. They did have a similar one in 9mm. Maybe I didn't use the search feature effectively.

In my opinion, once you get into the price range you’re looking at you need to start considering something that has at least some level of hand fitting done to it. Spending that much on a production gun might get you a purdy fancy finish but the gun it’s self, parts, and how well they work together are going to be the same as their base model gun. Kimber for example is fine for a $600-$700 gun on their base models, but their “custom shop” guns to me are way overpriced for just putting on a different finish and doing some fancy scallops on the slide. I’m not bashing Kimber, I carry one every day but it’s one of their base models that I put different sights on. Colts are similar in my opinion, you’re paying for the name and a reputation they had 40 years ago (their custom shop is an actual custom shop with hand fitting). The Dan Wesson’s I’ve either shot or played with have all felt like they’ve been fit well and have all had a very positive feeling thumb safety. I don’t own one yet, but I’m sure I will eventually.

If if it was me and depending on what all you’re wanting as far as options I keep my eyes open for a lightly used Dan Wesson, Les Baer, or STI if this is something you’re looking to not jump into immediately. Les Baer has a couple of basic options you can get into for new for just a little more if you’re wanting to buy new. STI gets forgotten about a lot outside of competition 2011s, but the slide to frame fit on mine is second only to my Les Baer. I don’t own a Dam Wesson yet, but I’ve drooled over their Specalits more times than I can count. In my opinion you definitely get what you pay for when you look into spending just a little bit more for something that’s hand fit versus a production 1911.
