I've decided that it's time to SBR, but I'm trying to decide which one. Here's my choices:

    UMP clone
    AR-15

The primary use will be home defense followed closely by the coolness factor, so what say the masses?
From a somewhat practical standpoint, why?

AR, that way if you wanna .223, 300 AAC, etc. SBR upper later on down the road, you can just buy an upper in whatever length you want. Easy decision for me.

The real question is which one is first. The UMP conversion can be had in .45, .40 and 9mm.

    Let the collecting begin!:):

The form 4 is going in the mail today for the UMP.

I'm going to end up with both sooner or later. My thinking, I'm going to SBR and suppress so I don't blow my eardrums if I ever had to use it. Advantage goes to?

The 6945 in my avatar is very loud. Even suppressed its still pretty loud. I've been shooting more of the pistol caliber carbines lately. They're fun, cheaper and quieter.

The advantage goes to the UMP, because you have the USC and the conversion is cheaper than buying an AR SBR.

I also have an AR-15, so I'm not sure it would end up being cheaper. What's the overall length of an AR-15 with a 10.5 barrel?

The 6945 has a 10.3" barrel. Stock retracted overall is 26". Extended is 29.5"

UMP has an overall length of 27.17, so two inches shorter. Now how about suppressor length between a .45 and .223?

I have a YHM phantom. The website says its 6.875" and weighs 20 oz. The .45 cans are around 8" and 11oz.

I have seen shootings using both the UMP .45 and the AR-15. Both were effective and did what they were supposed to at close range. I personally find the AR15 SBR easier to shoot than the UMP, but I have limited experience with the HK compared to the AR. Also, the trigger on the full auto UMP was extremely heavy, I dont know if the semi triggers are that bad, but take that into consideration. Also, the AR has a distinct advantage past 50 yards, but remember that you will lose fragmentation after 100-150yrds depending on your barrel length. The UMP is slightly easier to move through a house with due to the shorter OAL.

I bought a Colt 6933 Commando and have not looked back.

How can anyone say no to a UMP clone? That is just to much sexy for anyone to resist. Plus it shoots like a dream, and is an absolute tack driver out to 100 yards (past that it may be... im not that accurate)

Question, I have a carbine length AR-15, can I hack the barrel to 10.5 or will I run into problems with cycling? Of course, I realize I need a stamp first, but I'm looking at cheapest route....

You'd have problems. Shortening the barrel would mess up the dwell time. You would need a larger hole in your gas block and gas port to help with that.

As far as coolness factor goes, I'd jump on the UMP clone as Rev says, "that is too much sexy to resist". To meet your criteria of short and quiet, i'd go with an 8.2" 300Blk and a YHM308Ti can. [ame]http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tgKjbySsAik[/ame]

The video was very cool, even if he didn't have a really tight tshirt. I loved how quiet that gun was. I quick check of gunbroker removed all my desire to put a .300blk barrel on the Colt. The ammo I could find was between $1.60 > $2.00 +
    Per shot.

The .300 is an awesome round, but until the cost gets closer, I can't justify it.
At $1.60 per shot for .300, I can shoot a bad guy five times with 5.56. My wallet calculates that to 5.56 having about 400% more knockdown energy.

For short, quiet, and affordable to shoot, pistol caliber carbines can't be beat.
....... And they're sexier, Vitamink says so!
