I'm getting my Grendel AR put together and am looking at my options for optics. I am curious as to who is out there that is rocking a long range rifle with little to no magnification in an optic or irons? My caliber of choice is capable of 1000+, but I will only regularly be stretching it out to a max of 500 yards. Is your setup out of necessity or personal preference? Pump me up with your stories and convince me to stick with something in the 1-4 power range.

it all depends on what you want to do at 500 yards. if your going for minute of man 1-4 or 1-6 is fine, if your going for minute of angle then you will want 10xish. i made 7 out of 10 hits on a torso target with a pst 1-4 at 750 yards the only time i tried using holdover. out resident highpower shooters can make that shot with irons all day long

I'm not so great at long ranges, but I do shoot my Shiloh out to 500 with the tang and globe sights. I'll be getting more practice at it.

If you just want to be able to hit a man sized target at 500y then iron sites should work, and 4x would obviously work better. I like head shots, so I'd definitely prefer a 3-9x (or larger if it is for stationary targets). 2-7x would be the bare minimum for me, since I can't even spot my own shots at 100y with less than 4x.

I have a lot more fun when I can pinpoint my target, and that is just not possible when the target looks like a pinpoint! I think it all depends on how accurate you want to be, but I don't think anyone will tell you that irons are your best choice at 500y.

Nearly all of the hunting I do in North America involved a fixed 6x scope. I've never once felt I needed more magnification and dozens of those shots have been past the 500 yard mark.

I have a Trijicon TR 24-3 on a couple of ARs that I have shot out to 600 yards. Have not shot anything live with them.

    TR24-3 AccuPoint - Trijicon, Inc.

I have 2.75X on a couple of Scout and Quasi-Scouts.

I was taught 1X for each 100 yards, but that was a long time ago.

I prefer lower power for greater FOV. I like lots of exit mm too but that's just me.

Is your setup out of necessity or personal preference?

Bah, with guns the subjective is objective.

I always tell guys to think of them as hand tools. What's the "best" tool?

Ummm, well, do you want to drive a nail or saw a board?:D
