I was up for jury duty this week. There were microphones video cameras around the court and the Judge indicated that folks would need to speak up to be heard on the recording. There was also a court recorder there. Not sure what was the "official" record.

Got a confirmation of the old adage, "He who defends himself in court has a fool for a client.". The guy had an appointed standby council but by the way he conducted himself during jury selection it was pretty much a forgone conclusion that he was (rightfully) going down before the trial really got started.

I believe it varies from jurisdiction to jurisdiction. All the courts in my county digitally record everything, nothing gets transcribed unless needed for additional proceedings.

Since I've been practicing (2009), this has been the case. Even in small counties where the Walmart has a shed for horse n buggies.

Every time I've needed a court transcript, it always been recorded and the court reporter transcribes it only if it is ordered.
