Hence the question. Why not make our own 54R AK and drive the market for the 54R?

The 30-06 is superior but the 54R is cheaper

This brings us back to the point where the corporate marketing people do not believe that there is a market for it, the same way they don't believe that there are such things as tall fat people like Yours Truly.

When Kalishnikov designed the AK, he certainly had access to all the 54r he could want. He chose the 7.62x39.

As stated above, the rim is what makes the 54r less desirable for an autoloader.

Yes, he did, which brought us the PK and later PKM.

I'd personally love to see a wider market for the 54R as well as the 8mm, but the present favors more modernized ammunition. In my opinion the 30-06 is likely going to follow suit as well, with the new .30 cal rounds (.308, .338, 300bk, etc.)

There's also the decided switch towards short action rifles vs. long action.

There are definitely still a bunch of quite viable long cartridges out there; but with the advances in bullet construction and in powders/primers - the "need" for a long action bolt-rifle just isn't what it used to be.

For the hunter, there's nothing in North America that can't be cleanly taken with a .308 Win. Practically the perfect cartridge for this continent.

Ok lemme try this from another angle.

Why is vepr the only company to have a 54R ak. If they could do it then certainly century, arsenal, ddi, etc could compete.

Its not difficult to reverse engineer a stamped receiver
