I've got to load some .270 Win and I have some Reloader 22 powder. reloadammo.com says 58.5 gr for a 50 gr bullet. I've only got 130 gr and 140 gr bullets. Is this a good recipe?

I didn't realize that they even made .270 bullets as small as 50 grains. DO NOT put that much powder of a type not listed behind a bullet that is heavier than the one listed. VERY bad things could happen. Now if thats a typo and you meant 150 gr bullets. . . . well its probably gonna be ok but I'd look for a recipe for the lighter bullets. Reloader22 is a pretty slow powder so it is usually listed with heavier bullets in larger calibers.

Have you tried the bullet mfr's site?

Thanks, Sloughfoot, for coming through with concrete info. I'm in PA currently, a long way from my manuals.

Yes that was a typo, freaked you out didnt I? Thanks Sloughfoot for the info. Alliant website says 56.5 for the R22 with a 140 gr bullet. Fills the case pretty good. I'm going with that only have a few to do will put a couple down range tomorrow, pending the rain lets up.

Prayer list is full. Didn't want to have to add your recuperation to it.;)

Reloading is one of those things best undertaken with an abundance of caution and careful consideration.:yesway:

    130 and 140 grain whats?

Factors other than mass can figure in significantly.

Last time I had to remind myself not to like 270 Win I found Reloader 22 to be too slow. 52 grains of Reloader 15 and a moly'd 135 SMK is where I ended up.

Yeah, your response is why this is so interesting. In my experience, RE22 is ideal for the 130 and the 140 bullet in the 270. RE15 is too fast and falls short on velocity because of it.

For the 130, 3160 fps with RE22 and only 2840 fps with RE15. Both with max charges by the book.

My data for the 135 does not have anything for R15, but a max charge of Varget is 45 grains for about 2900 fps. As you know, Varget and RE15 are very similar.

There are only a few bullets made for the 270 and they are so close in bearing surface that it really does not matter between them.

*****Edit to add---I just realized you said a Moly 135. Moly does make a difference between bullets.

Don't know about the book, but out of a 22" factory Savage barrel I had 3080 fps with a 135 moly'd SMK and 52 grains of Reloader 15.

I ran out of case capacity at 62 grains of Reloader 22 and 3025 fps. The chamber was pretty short throated and had been able to seat longer it might have caught up.

Good point that there are no Scenars or AMaxes in .277". Matrix has some pretty slim offerings, but heavier than 150.
