My wife works in a high school in the office. She is very good with kids that have emotional and learning problems. She told me a story recently of a kid that just would not calm down for anyone and was just flat out freaking out. She finally got involved and was able to get the kid to tell her what was wrong. This boy is one that his parents aren’t on free and reduced lunches. so if he doesn’t pay he gets only a peanut butter and jelly sandwich. They can afford to pay but just won’t.

The boy had pretty bad emotional problems and I can see why from some of what she told me. This whole instance came down to he just wanted an ice cream cone and no one would help him. My wife told him it cant be all the time but when he wants something extra for lunch to make sure he tells the lunch lady to put it on our account. The whole problem was the kid wanted something simple and his parents are pieces of crap for not paying for lunch. He was eating peanut butter and jelly every day.

this was just one instance. My wife sees things that will make you want to give up your next 10 meals simply because people just don’t care about their kids.

Folks will have two or more cars, cell phones all around, big screen tv's cable/sat hit the casino's for entertainment and still won't buy food for their kids. They were raised wrong, are selfish and have no sense of responsibility. It's always someone else's fault.

Seen lots of hungry kids while teaching. Best part was when someone made sure a kid and another family always had food, but was told they did not care about the kids.

Growing up we used to host all the friends. I expect to do the same w my kid.

We were one of the houses they used to congregate at. I told the wife early on we didn't need to give every kid a steak dinner, but if a kid was hungry, we did need to feed him. We always did that, and I was never sorry. As I was leaving the farm today, one of them who'd come out to visit my daughter made a point to come out to the drive and give an old man a goodbye kiss on the cheek. Made me smile.

Any of you here ever take a second and look at what these parents, with kids that are with them, are putting in their grocery carts? Even in more affluent areas? They don't cook! Cooking is making a box of mac & cheese, or microwaving a frozen something. Heck, most never even do a hamburger helper. Having fresh cooked meat and vegetables is just not done in most homes.

Had a friend that would take her son to McD's drive through so she could get her Diet Coke and nuggets for the kid. He was so warped by this he wouldn't even eat most real food...

I try and cook for my daughter's friends when they come over, as I was taught its what you do for guests. They're so darn picky, its disappointing. I don't cook anything elaborate, bacon and eggs for breakfast, sammiches for lunch, and usually burgers for supper. Every time I've tried something else they take a bite and leave the rest. Junk food and Chick-fil-A always win. I never knew B&G or pork chops were exotic foods.

I had custody of both my kids and snagged my wife because I cooked dinner EVERY night. If I didn't cook, I had made dinner plans with her and the kids and she definitely liked that idea. Good luck with the current "adults" bearing children. OP thanks letting me in on the current sit-rep. I guess there are a few of us OG's around.

This is why I kinda feel bad. My kids' friends used to play in our house or yard all the time, and I'd give them popsicles, oranges, bananas, or Ho Hos or whatever, or maybe a PJ sandwich or throw some extra hot dogs on the grill. I would sometimes get irritated that it happened so often, and it didn't seem to be the norm at other parents' houses. I just thought they were being cheap with other kids, or maybe they just didn't want other people's kids in their house. I didn't know that they were being cheap with their own kids too. Had I known that their parents just didn't keep food in the house, I would have made more of an effort to give their friends a nice meal now and then.

Apparently, one family in particular just ate out all the time. Fast food drive-throughs, delivered pizzas and subs and stuff. She would tear into some home made meals at my house with vigor. I just thought it was because my wife and I are such good cooks. I didn't realize it was because it prrobably tasted so much better than her standard mass-produced, overly-processed meals.

Hey! Don't be bad mouthing boxed mac-n-cheese! :D

I do have my guilty pleasures now and then, and that's one of them. Cook up a couple boxes, brown a pound of ground beef and drain the fat, then throw it in with the mac-n-cheese and mix it up. Good and quick fuel for winter chores.

Junk food shouldn't be a staple, but there's nothing wrong with being bad every now and then. :evilangel:

Yeah I don't think it was as common back in the 90s, especially in the smaller towns, but I knew it could and did sometimes happen.

I had the benefit of growing up in an Italian family. The men taught the boys how to be men, and the women taught the girls how to be women, and the men and women taught everyone how to be self-sufficient. I can cook, and I can shoot. I can sew and I can repair and maintain vehicles. I can do laundry without dyeing everything the same color, and I can do carpentry to a greater degree than just nailing 2X4s together.

I have passed these skills on to my daughters, so they can be the next generation of OGs. Heck, they can do these things better than their boyfriends.

One of the other things my family passed on to me was taking care of others. My Grandma always set one extra plate at the table for dinner. I didn't understand it at first, so I asked her why she did it. She told me it was in case someone stopped by while we were having dinner, then they'd have a place ready. What was funny, is that sometimes someone did show up and use that plate.

Onions and what ever else is at hand. That makes a quick and easy meal. CKW has a routine for this. It is scrumptious.

All the neighbor kids played here with my kids and now with my grandkids. We always have treats and special goody's for them all. Only 1 set of parents we question on this topic but they moved away this summer. We miss the kids.

Unfortunately, I'm the only one from my family echelon on down that enjoys onions, so I don't get to incorporate them into dishes from the start, but I do add them to my portions.

Fortunately, I don't think they know that chives are very closely related to onions, so I can throw them into things without complaint. :):

Life is just better with chives.
Onions are a mainstay in our garden plot. We plant 2 times a season. Nothing better than you own home grown onions and "Chives"

We don't set out an extra place but CKW is quick to make a plate for anyone that may wonder in.
When we were deeply entrenched in Racing we had a group of regulars that would stop here right of a 2 week road trip before they went home. They knew Mom (that's what they called her) would have something delicious on the stove as she knew when the fellas would be rolling in. This was through the 80's and into the early 90's.
Many of those people still call her on her "B" day and "M" day and some send flowers on both.

What positives you put into this life will reward you at some point. I have seen it and lived it.
