With nearly 40 million guns sold in 2020, combined with the industry capacity to produce 9 billion rounds, only equates to a paltry little over 200 rounds for each new gun sold. Leaving not a single round for the 310 million guns sold since the late 90's. How many rounds does the typical buyer buy with their new gun?

The following are from their respective articles:

U.S. gun sales surged 60% to 4,137,480 in January, the largest single-month total since figures started to be recorded in 1998. The rise is part of a trend. Gun sales in the United States rose 40% last year to 39,695,315. The figure also represents the high water mark in gun sales since the current record-keeping system went into effect. Increases by state in January varied substantially, as has been the case for years.

The Federal Bureau of Investigation tracks gun sales and publishes a list of how many are handled as part of its National Instant Criminal Background Check System. Each month, the figures are reported by state. Nearly everyone put through this system qualifies as a buyer. People who are excluded usually have criminal records. Of the more than 310 million checks that have been done since 1998, there have only been 1.5 million denials. Therefore, the data is the best proxy for U.S. gun sales available.

During the .22 rimfire bubble, the productive capacity was increased from about 4 billion rimfire rounds to 5 billion rimfire rounds per year. The National Shooting Sports Foundation has estimated total ammunition produced for the United States market in 2017 at 8.1 billion rounds. In 2018, the total ammunition production for the United States was estimated at 8.7 billion rounds. The numbers for 2019 should be published in December of 2020.

A reasonable extrapolation puts the amount of ammunition produced for the United States market at somewhat over 9 billion rounds, of which 5 billion are rimfire and 4 billion are centerfire rifle, pistol, and shotgun rounds in 2020.

I stopped in at McGalliard guns in Muncie on Thursday and was disappointed how few guns they had in their store. The gentleman told my niece and I that there was currently a gun shortage.

Exactly. How many of those who have purchased all these guns are willing to take a stand to keep them?
