Nail polish or model paint either one will do, and you can experiment with color combinations pretty inexpensively..
Personally I didn't like the stock sights on the XDm-40 3.8 and went ahead and got a set of Trijicon night sights. It's not cheap (I paid around $75, sticker was $125) but they're much higher quality IMHO.
