I know this has been discussed before, but I thought it would be a good topic for a poll.

Is it legal, for for someone 18+ years old, to shoot a handgun at a shooting range, without a LTCH?

Please, no discussions, no opinions, no gun transportation scenarios, no "Yes, but..." answers.

It's a YES or NO question. Is it LEGAL?

If you have a Indiana Code to support your answer, you may quote it.

I voted no, because you can not transport it without an LTCH, unless going to or a place of sale or repair(something like that). That is the most common way that is why I voted no, but if you had a range on your property there is nothing stopping you from shooting there.

    and pudly I agree 100%.

ETA- after I re-read the question I changed my mind. Technically, it is legal for someone 18+ to SHOOT at a range without a LTCH.

If you brought the gun there yourself, no. If someone with an LTCH is with you, there is nothing stopping you from firing that weapon, I would assume one they brought?. Don't take my word for you it, get a friggin LTCH :D

    I voted YES.
If you are with someone who can legally own a handgun and legally bring it to the range (with a LTCH) I dont see anything that would make it illegal for a 18 years old to shoot that handgun. It's just like coming with your kids and letting them shoot your gun.
But if you come on your own with your own gun and dont have a LTCH then its not legal.
The question was just about shooting at the range so I dont know why people voted NO to it.

i called isp about this earlier this year, they said it was ok for a person with a ltch (driver) to transport the unloaded handguns in the trunk for a non ltch owner(pasenger) & for them to shoot(at a privately owned range). i also asked a swat officer, he said the same thing. the reasoning because the range such as pops is a privately owned establishment, you go by pops rules, they say kids are allowed to shoot too under adult supervision, why cant a 18 yr old..

I voted that it is illegal, only because I believe it technically is. I don't think you would ever have a problem with this however.

... If you are with someone who can legally CARRY [strike]own[/strike] a handgun and legally bring it to the range (with a LTCH)...
But if you come on your own with your own gun and dont have a LTCH then its not legal.

I Voted Yes ... based on this same logic ... nothing in the CODE says you must "OWN" the firearm to legal transport (CARRY) it ... it says you must legally be in possession of it (i.e. have a LTCH) to transport it ... which could be with the owners permission and an LTCH.

Shooting (not carrying) with such a person (who is in possession and legally transported) is not PROHIBITED in the code. ... unless you behave badly to a questioning LEO ... then they might take to a more 'strict' interpretation ...

Maybe I was not clear enough.
I meant to say "if you can legally own the gun" and not that you HAVE to own it but if you have a LTCH that means you can legally own the gun in the first place anyway.

I voted yes. My father in law has been a LEO for 37 years and when I bought my first handgun but didn't have my LTCH yet he took me to the range to shoot it. He said just as long as I had someone with a LTCH to tranport the gun for me I could go to the range and shoot it. I do have my LTCH now though but I know the range I go to doesn't even ask if you have one.

    Sylvain,
I wasn't trying to disagree with you (or point out error in your post) I was more trying to clarify MY logic ... starting from your post.

I think we are in agreement.:):

I believe it's illegal, how can someone holding a handgun not be in possession of it?

That being said I believe most cops use their common sense and don't enforce this law, I take adults and kids to the range that don't have their LTCH.

This is not a simple yes or no question, but without added discussion or circumstances I must go with the simple yes, it's legal.

    I vote legal.

If not, all of the gun rental counters at various ranges would be shut down. Including the one run by the State (doesn't Atterbury still rent handguns?)

Oops... I posted my argument. Sorry!
