Great idea. OP - try paracord with a magnet tied to the end of it.

Just pour mercury down the well, the screwdriver will float up. No harm done AND you get the screwdriver back!

OR.........

Buy a monkey, train the monkey to pick things up (shouldnt be too difficult).... Lower the monkey into the well with paracord, and have it grab the screwdriver. Then pull both out. Then you get your screwdriver, and a monkey to throw poop at people.

Try the magnet with a shroud around it so it won't stick to the side of the pipe.

Drop a few pounds of pure potassium down there. The resulting "reaction" will return your screw driver to you in a very timely manner.

My biggest concern would be the contamination of the well,
think of where that screwdriver has been,
the oils,
the grease,
the cadium plating of the driver itself.

I would be drop at least 50 gals. of straight bleach down the well head
and let it soak for a week, flush and do it again.

Of course, I would remove the original post also.

If the EPA catches wind that you inadvertently deposited a
contaminated tool into a known water source..........

What about a kangaroo? Handy pouch to hold your screwdriver in while she climbs back up! Hah, think about it...

Or a trained spider, they're very capable climbers.

The paracord and magnet sound good. Can you wrap ducttape around the magnet so just the bottom is exposed? (to keep it from sticking to the steel walls). The monkey ideas are making me lmaf.
