I'm gonna go with a lever action carbine in .357 mag, with my preference being a Marlin 1894 cowboy with the octagon barrel....in .357 it's big enough for deer or medium size game, handy enough and powerful enough for personal defense and with .38 special can take smaller game without losing too much meat, and either one would be a lot of fun for targets........I like the octagon barrel on the Marlin because I think it would be a bit stronger than a round barrel, and might live a bit longer(plus I think it looks better:D ).....nothing wrong with the other choices in the poll, but for all around versatility, since I could hypothetically have only one, this is my choice

:+1: I have the Marlin 1894c but with the round barrel. I agree with all your comments. I differ from esrice, though, in being confident that I could use it for self defense at home also. If the OP premise would allow, I would add a handgun in .357 to go with the Marlin. I would look at a single action Ruger. This pair would be reliable, durable, accurate and economical.

I chose the ar option simply because they are so versitle. I am hoping when you say "only one gun" we would still be allowed to make changes to that one gun.

Ruger GP100 4 inch, legal to hunt with, 6 rounds of .357, no need for magazines to make it go boom, as long as I've got the gun and ammo, ready to rock

i would have to go with my AR15, simply because you can do just about anything you need to with it except for stuff it in your pocket (thats what a sling is for). easy to shoot, easy to maintain. ammunition is (relatively) inexpensive.

my uncle was always an advocate of "a handgun is only good for killing time while you get to your long gun"...and once i shot my first rifle i realized their superiority...a pistol would never be my one and only gun...imho

My first thought was a pump shotgun due to the versatility and how effective it can be at home defense. But now, I'm thinking that the best thing to have would be an AK or AR so when you join the cause to restore our freedoms, you have something to work with.
