Just gotta chuckle at the twitter comment pleading to gov. christi and BO, "WE NEED GAS"...

Too bad they will probably never realize that they should have gotten their gas long before it happened... geeze people...

I keep my tanks topped off and my gas-stores full... I hope I'm never in the position that I need help that desperately... but if I ever do need help that bad my last resort isn't going to be to jump on my Iphone 12 GS SUPER MEGA LTEGSL100 super special smart phone and tweet to the president to come give me give me give me....

The 5 gallon Eagle gas can I bought at the beginning of this week on Amazon has went from $34.50 (free Prime shipping) to $40.00 + $7.00 shipping. I was gonna buy another one but think I'll shop around. Any good legit sources for NATO cans?

Prep for the Zombie Apocalypse. If you are ready for that, you are ready for anything.

I know we are not near an apocalyptic end to life as we know it but if you are ready, willing to set aside and plan, you will most likely survive. Mother nature is a Biatch of epic proportion and will deal out some bad hands on occasion.

This might be off the accepted logic on this and many other survival forums, but I have learned again that if your home, where your preps are located is swept away by flood, hurricane, tornado, earthquake, you might have to get by with whatever is on you or in your bugout vehicle, or can be salvaged from your demolished home.

Even those who prepped in advance of this storm lost eveything when the waters and wind came. Even those with weeks worth of food, water, and fuel in storage in the basement, lost everything to nature's power.

Of course, those who didn't plan ahead are screwed, but even preppers can get screwed too. They just don't get the press that the totally unprepared get because preppers are not whiners. They find a way outside of the box.

    That is my opinion. FWIW

Funny, growing up in the heart of tornado alley apparently taught me some things that Staten Island residents hadn't experienced.
1.) When replacing a home the insurance will require you to itemize everything that you lost (do you really remember how many pairs of socks? Jeans? Sheet sets and towels you had?) so it is helpful to have pictures of every room and keep them at a friend/family members home...preferably someone who wouldn't be in the path of the same storm.
2.) Whatever you will need AFTER the storm must be purchased BEFORE the storm. (duh)
3.) Assume that even if you aren't a direct hit that someone you love may be and you will need to help them dig out or put them up and share your supplies.
4.) Assume that stores won't be open for 3-4 days and prepare accordingly.
5.) Know the storm plan of your family and friends. Communication may not be possible after a big storm. If you have to go looking for someone it's good to know their "shelter" location.
It seems basic, and we grew up like this. I'm watching these desperate people on TV and can't believe they are demanding someone else to come in and give them help??? That's what the three days warning prior to the hurricane was for!!!

    A holler in Kentucky
When the hurricane winds came through Indiana a few years back, I was in bad need of a chainsaw, I had one, just not one good enough to do what I needed to do. Chainsaws were like gold around here for a few weeks after, and, among other things I learned the value of during that week without power, I went out and bought a nice Stihl, gallons of bar oil, extra chains, everything I could possibly need to clear limbs, and trees for that matter, the next time a storm came through. That following winter, we had a big ice storm, and I was prepared! There is nothing like the feeling of having something bad happen, but being prepared to handle it.

I doubt very seriously that any significant number of people who are in distress right now, will be prepared for the next SHTF event, it's what the country has become, and it's frightening. The silver lining is, the large majority of people in distress, will not be around long to drag down those who are prepared.

If I knew an epic storm of the century was coming the gas would be dealt with. Yes, many lost everything to the surge/fire and wind. Those standing and fighting in the lines were ill prepared at best.

I've always thought that just losing power for an extended length of time would be all it would take to set off a SHTF situation in the US. It's only been 3 days and they are already looting and starving. This is definitely a reality check.

I've watched several interviews of people on Statten Island who just can't believe that after 3-4 days the government hasn't shown up to help them. I can't help feeling sorry for them because they really expected the government to take care of them and they're still waiting.

Just to clarify my comment above isn't intended to find fault with the government's response. I think they're doing what they can but the need is enormous. My concern is the mindset that some people have that they expect to be taken care of rather than taking responsibility for theirself and their own family.

They need to break out their "Obama Phones" and call for some help... Obama got his campaign points for looking around and now he's gone.

I learned a major lesson from the two hurricanes I lived through - Alicia in 1983 and Carlos in 1985 - DON'T LIVE NEAR THE EAST COAST OR GULF COAST!!!

Not that a major earthquake or a tornado outbreak couldn't do the same things here that are causing so much (temporary) suffering on the East Coast right now.

After seeing what is happening in NJ and NY especially Staten Island a 72 hour emergency food and water kit is not sufficient.

I've watched several interviews of people on Statten Island who just can't believe that after 3-4 days the government hasn't shown up to help them. I can't help feeling sorry for them because they really expected the government to take care of them and they're still waiting.

Don't feel sorry for them. They like everyone else has/had an equal oppurtunity to prepare, but they choose not to. Just like the story of the ant and the rabbit (??). The ant spent all summer working putting away food for the winter while the rabbit played all summer long and did not prepapre. Come winter time the rabbit it starving and cold while the ant is nice and warm with plenty of food.

We all got taught that story in grade school they want to be like rabbits well enjoy your winter.

Except this wasn't "just losing power."
