Unless I'm mistaken about laws, I almost screwed up.
I have a gun for sale on Arms, and was contacted by a potential buyer. We negotiated a deal and was supposed to be picked up tomorrow. While at work i realized i forgot to ask the legal q's. So I asked for him to show me IN drivers to verify age/IN resident when we meet and if legal to purchase handguns.
His response was: "I have my carry permit but am only 20, i can bring a friend that's 21 if that helps?".
My response:"I'm sorry, i can't sell you the gun knowing it's for someone under the age of 21."
His classic kid response:" Well I've bought numerous guns and have the right to carry. Fine, keep it."

Was I right in not selling to someone under 21? It was a handgun.

Yep, private sale is gtg as long as 18+, IN resident, and you have no reason to believe the person is not a "proper person".

Instead of "almost f***ed up", you "almost sold a gun". :D

No, but you have his contact info, just get back at him and apologize, and let him know you were just trying to be safer than sorry. At least you are trying to be completely legal, gotta respect that. :yesway:

This is likely going to get me flamed, but here it goes anyway... :flamethrower:

There is what is legal, and then if legal there is what are you comfortable with? I confess I would likely not sell a gun to a 19-year-old I did not know. There are lots of different maturity levels at 19 and some aren't done growing up yet. I know myself well enough to know I'd feel horrible guilt if I sold a gun to a 19-year-old who did something careless or stupid that hurt someone.

Of course, I generally think selling guns is a bad idea in the first place, one that is bound to lead to seller's remorse. :dunno:

I agree. Also it doesn't have have much to do with age as adults well over 18 often do stupid stuff too.
For example if you see that the person who came to buy your gun looks drunk or high it's maybe not a good idea to sell him the gun even though it would probably be legal anyway. :dunno:

Agreed. I've canceled a deal before at the meet when the buyer stepped out of his car with his pants sagging off his a**(gangsta style), even explained to him why. After some choice words on his behalf we were on our way.:):

:facepalm:Well, I feel like a d**k. Thanks for the clarification.

Don't. You were doing what you thought was the right thing, and I respect that. It is not easy to know all the laws and regs, there are so many of them, and that is one thing I like about INGO -- you can connect with lots of people who know their stuff and are willing to help.

legit or not - you felt you did the right thing. It took some stones to put it up here for all of us to see too.

good on ya for halting a sale, albeit, one that "could of gone thru" - but still - you played your gut card.

    good on ya.
