To easy to get arrested and then sued. Or is it the other way around.....:dunno:

Seriously, people are so concerned about self preservation these days both physically and financially.
Don't get me wrong. I'm not advocating jumping in without thought just because something is going down. But someone getting blindsided on the back of a head with the shovel crosses the line. That blow could have killed the father.

He is very lucky it did not end him. I would wager he has a concussion.

The level that one gets involved in things like this has to be a personal decision. Have to be there to understand. I have had domestic insanity next door a few times. Had to get involved more than once. Drunken husband loved to drag his wife out front and beat her up. 1st time we just separated them until LEO arrived. 2nd time he was tearing her cloths off of her and slamming her head into the ground. Attempted field goal with his melon ended that pretty quick. She was removed to the hospital and he had to be looked at himself before going downtown. Sometimes you just have to step in.

I would agree with this of course. If you're about to see that line being crossed then by all means get involved if you feel the need but it seems like the father and son have no interest in ending the feud themselves.

My point was that if you choose to get involved then be prepared in the event the feuding family members decide to turn on you.

Yea but as my father always said when he caught me and my brother fighting...

Let's say the son didn't run away when the OP yelled and instead he attacked the OP. One of two things could then happen. The OP could be put in a place where he had to use deadly force on the son or the son could've hurt or killed OP, possibly with his own gun. All because he got involved.

Did the OP have reason to "pull his shirt to clear his gun"?? What does this even mean? Did he not get involved in a fight that wasn't his and then prepare himself to use force?

I stayed where I was to avoid the 3rd party drama and potential danger of both guys going at it. I had 100 ft and a fence between me and the incident. I had prior knowledge that the teen didn't have a gun. He stated to his dad that he wished he had a gun so he could pop him. The only way I got involved was by making the call to authorities and after the father had been taken into his house and the teen started into his yard towards the house again with shovel in hand whereby I vocally commanded him to leave. I carry IWB. Things were heated and dangerous, so I pulled my shirt up for access to the grip of my handgun in case things got worse...from where I was still standing. If the teen turned on me, he'd have to make a 100 ft dash and jump a fence to bare down on me while I already had access to my handgun just in case. Whether he saw my hand resting on the grip of my handgun as I told him to leave is up to question. I think more likely though, a stranger with a commanding voice got him back to the reality of what was going down and he knew not to bite off any more than he had.

Sgtusmc, seems to me you did the reasonable thing, FWIW. There is a fine line between getting yourself drawn in to a family feud and letting things just go too far.

You were there. You did what you thought was right. Don't let the Wednesday morning quarterbacks get you down. When the neighbor is getting killed some people hide in their basement some don't. I would rather live next to you.

I can honestly say I am not sure what I would have done in that situation, I would have called the cops, but I doubt I would have gotten involved. Anyone crazy enough to try to kill his own father is crazy enough to attack someone trying to stop him, or maybe attack my wife or my young sons when I am not at home, or burn my house down. I'll do what I can, but I am looking out for myself and my family first.

When I asked the father if he was alright, he did say one thing that was reasonable. When I told him I didn't want to get involved and just wanted to know if he was alright, he said "You HAVE to get involved...if nobody gets involved, nobody cares...do YOU care?" I said of course I care. After that, his eyes got all squirrly looking at me and he started into his street rant about "this is how we are". I think the guy has a serious concussion. All the while, the other two black dudes walking with him politely telling me thank you, thank you man.

You seem to be one who would stand by and watch someone get beat down or worse. That is your right and at some level I respect it.
Now, you would just stand there and watch that young man (already shown no mercy by sneak attack with a shovel) run in and do more damage. Really. You would say and or do nothing????

Remember, it is your street also. You live there. Do you want that kind of crap going on around you??

I can see from this you have never faced a situation where others may or will come to harm. I hope for their sake you never do.
    Carry on.
