    First world problems.

It's great to live in the first world.:)

Gimmicks like this have been going on for years. The united way forged relationships with the top brass of big companies who then used their management power to "suggest" to those employed by them that donations to the united way would reflect favorably on their increases and promotions. At the same time the boss of the united way was using the money to jet set around the world with a plane load of hookers. It's a great first world gig when you can get it.

The point your missing when Walgreens uses your money is that your money wouldn't have been used for that charity if Walgreens didn't ask you. So again Walgreens is using their influence to raise awareness and money and you get to be a part of that team.

if you gave often to a place you were fond of, you wouldn't feel bad about saying no to a charity you don't suport. It's no big, you can't help them all, so pick one or two that you like and give generously. Then when someone asks you your conscious is clear because you're doing your own thing.

If you only give when the stores ask you and wouldn't give otherwise then, once again, I believe you are giving for the wrong reason.

I don't feel bad saying "no"...I still find it annoying.

I have to agree with the OP. If I'm at Culvers, I'm not there to be solicited for a charity, I'm there for a hamburger. When a charity has made a deal for large corporations to solicit their customer base for money, I'm left wondering what other back room deal was made for the dispersal of the money.

My giving is planned and budgeted annually even though from time to time I will give to a needy person/family directly. I simply refuse to donate to quagmire mega charities who require recipients to basically "write a grant" to receive funds.

Walgreens when they have a "candy bar for the troops" campaign I'll buy one.
It depends on the day I guess for other things, fast food and grocery stores usually get the "no thanks" option.
Strangely enough, I round up my purchases at Petco for shelter animals... I'm kind of weird like that.

Backroom deal? You make it sound like some kind of mob deal.

When a charity is having a local fund raising drive the local board/volunteers try to get local businesses help in the fund raising. Some businesses will work with a charity on a national business, but most are local. They get no credit for this money. A business only gets recognition for money they donate.

As a multi location business owner having personal experience with United Way they are about as close to "mob" as you can get. I don't know about the rest of them but bargaining with the teamsters would be a walk in the park compared to declining United Way's "invitation".

If people are concerned about being embarrassed to say "no" when asked to "help the troops", just follow my lead:

"What, 4 years of my life and my left testicle aren't enough?"

Then just relax and watch the backpedaling begin (I have both, but whose going to check?)

I'm not a fan of them. My personal experience is with the March of Dimes.
