I still can't find anything in the Indiana Code where it says anything about butterfly knives / balisongs being illegal? Perhaps they once were... But I've scoured the "knife section" and can't find anything?

At the time, the officer explained to me that although it was not an automatic, it was considered a martial arts weapon and still illegal under Indiana knife law.
    ............

Yeah. Sounds like the officer might have been making up code after watching to many "American ninja" movies.
He better stay away from any Karate exibition or the guy with the Kama might get tazered.

Anyone have the code citation. I'd like to see that listed there.

I know that throwing knives and stars are illegal but the balisong is neither.
If you push on the balisong with one finger, sadly it will not open by itself.

It's not a switchblade, spring operated, auto opening knife of any kind.
Can they be deployed quickly? - Yes.
    But by no mechanical means.
I can pull a fixed blade out of a drawer just as quickly and it's not an "auto" knife.

For a couple years they specified "gravity opened knives."

I don't recall the butterfly knife being a MA weapon; there is a totally different style with a wide, fixed blade and handguard called a butterfly knife, but the two are not relate.

Get yourself a nice Kersaw assisted opening knife. It's not quite the same as an auto but you can open it one handed.

I carry my Kershaw Blackout every day and i love it. I recently broke the tip of it off and i sent it into them and they sent me a brand new one!:rockwoot: Im a HUGE fan of kershaw, and my next knife will be a ZT. However, there is something about autos, especially microtech OTF's, that i just cant get over. I have carried some Boker, S&W, and other auto's but the more i think about it the more i realize its just not worth it!

Kershaw and ZT are both good to go, for sure. I own a few Kershaws and a couple ZT's, they're great blades. KAI owns them both, makes superior products for reasonable prices.

If I understand correctly is is Illegal to posses one in Indiana.

To be compliant with the law you must remove it from Indiana soil.

Guys it's illegal to own one. Why are you so obsessed about the punishment or whether it's prosecuted. It's illegal so 1st don't own one and 2nd) don't discuss it on a public board whether it's just a slap or whether you get half a year in jail. I certainly prefer my own accommodations.

no one has admitted to owning an illegal knife here, i said i have carried one in the past, which i know is illegal. But that was in the past, there is nothing wrong with discussing the laws and people's personal opinion's on those laws. We arent "obsessed" about the punishment or whether its prosecuted, i just started a thread to decide if it worth the risk to carry an automatic knife, which i know have decided it is not. Discussing topics about things or objects that are illegal is not wrong or illegal itself.

I also prefer my own accomodations, and that is why i have decided no autos for me.:D

pretty sure theres still a nsn number on those auto benchmades. our supply guy did some creative ordering and got us all one.

We have NSNs for the Oakleys too. Our supply guy just sucks. My 1sg got his Auto Benchmade during the invasioin, he said it was part of their RFI along with the Oakleys.

And I read the indiana knife law, I'm pretty sure they are illegal to own. I remember this because I remember thinking my auto open and OTF Benchmades could be an issue and I should probably just keep it in the gun safe.

They're not necessarily illegal to own...

But they're illegal to have in Indiana (with a few very narrow exceptions)

that would have been nice. we didnt even get revisions issued though. we got some bootleg pieces of crap. oakleys are dirt cheap on standard issue, so i went that route. looking cool is just as important as being tactically proficient.

we were trained that the cooler / more badass you look the less likely you are to be messed with... "There is no point in being a badass unless you look the part too" :rockwoot: exact quote from a training NCO haha

You guys, stop this! Geez, I leave this thread for a couple of days and it turns into a gun shop.

it was considered a martial arts weapon and still illegal under Indiana knife law.

There is no such thing under Indiana law as a "martial arts" weapon. If this traffic stop transpired in Indiana, you need to have your property returned.

If so, I have a basement full of them.:D

Yes, automatic knives are illegal in Indiana. There are no exceptions!!! Not for the po-po, not for EMTs, not for one-armed men who really killed the doctor's wife, not for anyone.

You mean this wasn't covered in H.R. 218?? Crap... ;)

    Aaaaaahhhhh!!!

Now you stop that. Geez, I'm going to go running off into the Wabash.:n00b::xmad::D

thats no joke. he sounds like a wise man.

after two tours with 1st ID and a year as a senior DS (E7) a wise man he was. He showed us some video from his unit and the part that impressed us new soldiers was how calm he was under fire... Scary calm. I've seen vids and heard radio traffic (originally trained in commo) of some guys loosing it or even just being riled up, but not DS. He sounded like he was ordering at Mcdonalds. He said that the rarely got hit out on convoys, but when the guard units would role out (kevlars un-snaped, IBAs open, "just chillin") they'd get nailed all the time.

    sorry for the :hijack:

Yes it was in Indiana. Clermont just infront of the Marathon station. It was about eleven years ago, I was nineteen and didn't know the laws. (still don't know all the laws on knives as I am more into firearms) but anyway my loss for ignorance of the law.

I supose the Sheriff ripped me off without knowing himself, but he could have done it on pourpose.
