If you read some studies, being distracted is MUCH worse than being slightly over the DUI limit. I'm not talking about falling over drunk, but being slightly inebriated.

    Saw a great bumper sticker:
Don't drive drunk. You'll get hit by someone texting and end up in jail.

These facts are readily available. People do not want to believe this.
Distracted driving be it texting/phone use/using a computer or reading is the most dangerous. Yes I have rolled up on people with a book open in the steering wheel reading it and others working a phone call and a computer at interstate speeds.

    Adulting this is not.

Yup. Can't argue there. But make the penalty harsh enough.....and the grown up children will figure out they better not text and drive after someone they know gets locked up for 20 years for killing someone while texting and driving.

Nobody in Indiana gets locked up for 20 years for killing anyone with a vehicle, no matter what they are doing while driving.

Yup. The human brain does not multitask. It is not possible. Your brain can switch between multiple subjects quickly, but true multitasking is impossible. That means that when you're texting.....your brain is actually completely disengaged from driving.

Assuming nothing more, had she not fled the scene, what would the max be?

This was not an accident where a kid darted out in front of car. She left the roadway, drove up onto a sidewalk/front yard, for a good distance, and mowed down 5 people.

I have to assume something more than, she was a really bad driver.:dunno:

What if she was on her phone, uploading classified nuclear secrets to the North Korean Government?

That would've gotten her more than 20 years, but leaving the scene gave her the opportunity to ditch her disposable phone, so now we'll never really know.

I don't know that even that would get her 20 years. Is her name Hillary? No need to ditch the phone, that's what hammers and Bleachbit are for.

Kill three, injure two more, flee the scene, and max possible sentence is 21-1/2 years:rolleyes:...

Suspects surrender in Elkhart triple hit-and-run death case

Which is a little less than 11 years in prison. Probably even less than that with early parole.

The only thing that might gets you 20+ actual years for killing someone with a vehicle is intentional murder or maybe a terrorist attack.

And that goes a bit beyond the traffic code. :):

    The max?

    Life.

If she had an otherwise spotless record up to this point, I could live with something less. Like 10 years per count, served consecutively.

This is not even close to what the issue really is at least in my warped little mind.
I was behind a brand new high dollar pick up today for a drive downtown. Every light. Every one of them I had to blow my horn to get this idiots head out of the phone to move forward. He missed half of every green light maybe 6 or 7 in a row. That has zero to do with any standard equipment on the truck.
